NEW YORK – Rodarte brought dark gothic glamor and opulence into play New York fashion week on Friday with a shimmering show that transported the audience to a majestic Celtic fairyland with a dark twist.
The grandiose show, held at the Williamsburg Savings Bank, included dining tables adorned with silver candelabra and dotted with food and fruit covered in silver glitter, lending the presentation of the fall/winter collection a sense of performance art .
Designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy of the Rodarte sister duo, who worked on the tutus for 2010’s Black Swan, appear to have once again taken inspiration from the film. Rodarte’s line showed that the “balletcore” style trend may be taking a darker path this year.
The models sported heavy winged black eyeliner and black lipstick to match their black dresses with long and pointy sleeves draped to the floor for a dark fairy look.
In signature Rodarte fashion, buttery satin, ruffles, ribbons and lace featured heavily in some of the most visually pleasing gowns, with simple silhouettes and puffy, broad shoulders and textures. Some models wore capes and held magnificent bouquets of tulips in their hands.
Tori Amos’ ‘Winter’ set a haunting vibe as the robes became increasingly avant-garde with shades of yellow, green and purple. A handful of models wore oversized black, blue and purple bonnets and veils like Tim Burton characters.
celebrities such as Lana Condor, Brie Larson, Quinta Brunson, Maddie Ziegler And Rachel Zoe were present on Friday afternoon. Sitting in the front row was Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, wearing her sunglasses in the dimly lit bench.
The forest-themed show also had models wearing silver fairy ears, crowns and ornate headpieces to complement the night’s storytelling.
Some of the afternoon’s most striking looks were worn by four models, draped in baggy to mid-length colorful and iridescent tinsel dresses. Towards the end of the show, each model stood in the center of the glittering tables for a moment of appreciation.
A weighted and structured gold tinsel dress trailing some 6 meters behind its model capped off the wistful and folkloric show.
