Three films from India are part of multiple shortlists for the 2023 Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Wednesday. The high-energy dance song “Naatu Naatu” from SS Rajamouli’s action-packed affair RRR competes for Best Original Song. India’s international feature film entry this year is Pan Nalin-directed Chhello Show / The Last Film Show, which competes against the likes of Joyland, a first-ever nomination for Pakistan. AMPAS has unveiled shortlists for the 2023 Oscars in 10 categories, with entries being trimmed down to five or six, with all other nominees to be announced on January 24, 2023. The 95th Academy Awards is scheduled to take place on March 12, 2023.

The third Indian film to receive a mention is Anything that breathes, a New Delhi-based documentary directed by Shaunak Sen that investigates two brothers who devote their lives to treating injured birds. All That Breathes was also nominated in the Best Documentary category. It is one of the 15 best films to have made it into cinemas Academy list, after surviving a tough competition against 143 others. All That Breathes has not yet secured an Indian release.

Films from 92 countries and regions were eligible for the International Feature Shortlist after meeting a “minimum viewability requirement” to be eligible to vote. In the nomination round academy Members must view all 15 films before deciding on their nomination for the Grand oscars Event.

Set against the backdrop of a Gujarati village, Chhello show explores the childlike innocence of a nine-year-old boy who spends a summer captivated by the magic of cinema, inspiring him to create one of his own – unaware of the heartbreaking times that await him. The movie is currently available to see on Netflix in Gujarati language, alongside a Hindi dub.

India’s neighbor Pakistan is also shortlisted for international feature films — joy land. In it, a patriarchal family’s dreams of having a baby boy are shattered when their youngest son falls in love with a transgender starlet. Joyland is the first Pakistani film to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. It was released in Pakistan in mid-November but has no date in India yet.
