Quentin Tarantino’s supposedly last film is reportedly called ‘The Movie Critic’. According to a report, the acclaimed filmmaker plans to direct the film this fall, which is likely set in late 1970s Los Angeles and will star a female lead. For now, one could just assume who The Movie Critic will be based on, as the director is notorious for basing his characters on existing material. The report believes the film could be the story of Pauline Kael, the renowned American film critic who briefly worked as a consultant at Paramount Pictures in the late 1970s. The timeline matches the script’s reported setting.
The Report by The Hollywood Reporter asserts that The Film Critic currently has no production studio and that it would be offered to buyers “as soon as this week”. Tarantino showed his admiration for critics Kael she previously claimed that she was a major influence on him — and even published a book of essays inspired by her work called Cinema Speculation.
The filmmaker has also previously shared thoughts about his retirement, claiming that directors are losing touch with age. “I want to stop at a certain point. Directors don’t get better as they get older. Usually the last four end up being the worst movies in their filmography. It’s all about my filmography and a bad film f*s up three good ones,” he said in a 2012 interview (via Weekly entertainment). “I don’t want that bad, hilarious comedy in my filmography, the one that makes people go, ‘Oh man, he still thinks it was 20 years ago.’ When directors are outdated, it’s not nice.”
Tarantino previously worked with Sony images for the Oscar nominee Once upon a time in Hollywood, which THR believes could also be a strong contender for The Movie Critic production. The movie won two Oscars – Best supporting actor (Brad Pitt) and Best Production Design – whereupon the author published a novel version of the same, marking his debut as an author. An audio book narrated by Jennifer Jason Leigh, who previously worked with the filmmaker on The Hateful Eight, was also released in 2021.
The Movie Critic will be the tenth and likely last film directed by Tarantino — if you combine both Kill Bill volumes into one megamovie — as he tries to avoid the “terrible final movie” curse (via filmmakers). Late last year, the filmmaker also revealed plans An eight-episode limited series is rumored to start filming in 2023 Netflix. He has experience working in television, directing two episodes of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in 2005. The season five finale, Grave Danger, earned him an Outstanding Director nomination at the 57th Emmy Awards.
