LOS ANGELES – Hulu on Wednesday became the second television company to sever ties with Justin Roiland, creator of “Rick and Morty.” following domestic violence charges were uncovered against him.
“We have ended our collaboration with Justin Roiland,” 20th TV Animation and Hulu Originals said in a statement.
Roiland was a co-creator and voice actor on the streaming provider’s animated series Solar Opposites and is also a producer and actor on the animated series Koala Man. Both shows will continue without him.
On Tuesday, the Adult Swim division of Cartoon Network, home of animated sci-fi sitcom Rick and Morty, took the same step, saying in a brief statement that they had ended their collaboration with Roiland.
Squanch Games, a video game developer Roiland co-founded, said on Twitter later Tuesday that he had left the company.
Roiland, 42, was charged in Orange County, California in January 2020 with two counts of domestic violence against a former girlfriend he lived with. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.
The charges had not been reported until then NBC News ran a story about her earlier this month.
Roiland’s lawyer and publicist did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.
Roiland provided the voices of the two title characters, a mad scientist and his grandson, in Rick and Morty. He and Dan Harmon created the show, which will run for six seasons and has been renewed for a seventh The series will continue without him, but has not yet announced who the new singers will be.
