ORLANDO, Fla. – Before Doug Lawson was a Rivera Beach councilora mentor, a business owner or even an entrepreneur for that matter, he was born into a family of determined Jamaican immigrants.

This week on Black Men Sundays, host Corie Murray interviews Lawson and talks about the good that decades of dreaming can bring.

In addition to the many titles Lawson has made for himself since then, he has also successfully built generational wealth. The thing is, he said, something like this is possible without real estate, but not likely.

“Every kind of millionaire, billionaire and everyone who’s had wealth has owned land because money comes and goes, it’s the fact that we don’t make more of it is Land, so if you can actually hold a piece of it here in the States, anywhere in this country, or anywhere in this world, nothing else gets created in the world, so it’s the only kind of resource, just kind of equity, Die only type of asset we can literally invest in that won’t go anywhere because you can go up and down, the market will crash every seven to ten years so you know real estate gives you the opportunity to hold onto something and still be able to pay off the debt,” Lawson said.

As a successful first-generation US citizen, the term “American Dream” was often mentioned in conversation, which referred to both the background and the goal of Lawson’s efforts.

“The true definition of the American Dream growing up was not being on the streets by the age of 15-16. The American Dream shouldn’t be killed, shot, or dead like some of my friends I grew up with,” Lawson said. “Personally, I found the American Dream when I could stabilize my household, develop an amazing relationship with my daughter, find my beautiful wife, and be able to continue to teach the community how to read and write, as an elected official, the leadership of servants to teach, and I continue to build this American Dream for myself because it’s in what your mind has, it’s in your personal heart and what you believe in.”
