WASHINGTON – The Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a public health alert on Wednesday following multiple customer complaints of rocks in bags of frozen, ready-to-eat Trader Joe’s chicken pilaf.

The alert applies to 14-oz. plastic packages of “Trader Joe’s Chicken, Lentil, & Caramelized Onion Pilaf WITH SAFFRON BASMATI RICE, DARK CHICKEN MEAT, DATES & GOLDEN RAISINS,” with the impacted products said to bear No. P-45322 inside of the USDA mark of inspection.

There was no recall requested because the product can no longer be purchased, according to FSIS. Consumers who may still have the product in their freezer are urged to throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.

Multiple consumer complaints were received of rocks in the pilaf, with one consumer reporting a dental injury, FSIS said in a statement. The product was produced on various dates from Nov. 1, 2023, through Jan. 19, 2024, and was sold in Trader Joe’s grocery stores nationwide, the statement reads.

Beyond the complaints that prompted the health alert, none further have been received, according to FSIS.

FSIS recommended that anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider, adding those with questions about the public health alert could call the producing establishment, Mama Vicky’s, at 818-583-0003.
