ORLANDO, Fla. – Friday on Breakfast with Bridgett, we learned about ways to keep your sensitive information and tax filing safe this tax season.
Lynette Owens from TrendMicro says there are scams targeting taxpayers coming through emails, texts and phone calls to watch out for.
“The way I like to think about it is the scams that claim to help you save money. The messages that say, ‘If you click here, if you use our service, we’re going to help you lower what you owe,’” she said. “The other is messages that say, ‘You owe more than you think you did, so you better take this action click on this link or call this number.’”

Owens says to always call, email, or visit websites you know and trust directly to be sure you’re not being scammed. She also recommends using security software or an anti-scam tool like TrendMicro Scam Check.
“All you need to do is download from your app store, snap a pic, send to us and we’ll tell you if it’s a scam or not,” she said.
Another ripoff Owens warned about is scam charities, claiming to be collecting donations for disaster victims or others in need.
