On August 22, House of the Dragon, a prequel to the popular fantasy drama Game of Thrones, was released. While only one episode of the current season has been released, HBO announced on Friday that the show will return for a second season. The show depicts the glory days of popular Game of Thrones kingdom rulers’ ancestors. The show is based on George RR Martin’s book — Fire and Blood — and is set around 200 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen or the Khaleesi.

HBO Max announced the renewal of the second season of House of the Dragon on Twitter with a picture of a dragon. The decision was made after Season 1’s debut in the United States on Sunday drew over 10 million viewers overnight, breaking an HBO record for a series premiere.

The show has now set a record for “the largest audience for any new original series in HBO history,” according to WarnerMedia, the television network’s owner.

“Our incredible cast and crew took on a massive challenge and outperformed all expectations.” Thank you so much [to co-creator and executive producer George R.R. Martin, as well as co-creators and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik] for taking us on this adventure. “With season two, we couldn’t be more excited to continue telling the epic saga of House Targaryen,” said Francesca Orsi, executive VP, HBO programming.

The House of the Dragon’s first season consists of ten episodes directed by Ryan J. Condal in collaboration with other showrunners. The weekly release series will conclude on October 24. The show is currently airing on Disney+ Hotstar in India.

Meanwhile, Game of Thrones was on the air for eight seasons between 2011 and 2019. At least seven other spinoff projects are currently in the works for the series.
