Telegram released its first major update of 2023 on February 3rd, adding some important features. The last major update the app received was in December of last year. However, some of the latest updates are only available for Telegram Premium users, including the ability to translate an entire chat in real time. The Translate button is at the top of every foreign language thread, including personal chats, groups, and channels. Users can choose which languages to translate into or hide the bar from the options menu.

Users can also control the auto-save feature of all incoming media with the latest Telegram update. “You can control when media is automatically saved to your gallery based on its size, type, and the chat it was received from. This menu also now supports exceptions, so you can save only exactly what you want,” the post reads. This feature is backed by another, dubbed “Granular Media Permissions,” which allows admins to “choose whether group members are allowed to send 9 different types of media — like photos, voice, or video messages.” You can also turn off text messaging to create media-only groups.” It also allows for “voice-only or quiz-only communications” without regular admin intervention.
With the new update, Telegram users who have signed out can quickly re-enter their Apple or Google IDs without having to access an SMS code, but they’ll still need to enter their 2-Step Verification password when they have one.
This update also allows bot developers on Telegram to “add special buttons that help users select groups, channels, or people that meet predefined criteria. For example, this can be used to quickly add the bot to a group where the user is an admin and topics are enabled.”
Telegram also rolled out some updates related to emojis. The site has introduced several hundred custom emojis and interactive emojis, with the latter “triggering a full-screen effect” when tapped, according to the post. All “stickers and emojis are now sorted by category” and users can “press and hold any emoji to zoom in and get a better look before sending”. Telegram also allows turning “any sticker or animated emoji” “into a profile picture”.
Another premium feature update mentioned in the post is offering a 40 percent discount on “Telegram Premium subscription by prepaying for one year”.
