Twitter announced on Wednesday that it was offering an annual plan for its subscription service called Twitter Blue, which includes the coveted “verified” badge, at a discount off the monthly price.
Users can subscribe to the service at an annual price of $84 instead of a monthly subscription price of $8 online and $11 online Apple Devices.
The discount would be available in countries like United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Twitter said.
Since billionaire Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion last year, he has brought changes to the company, including new subscription plans for Twitter Blue.
The blue tick was previously reserved for verified accounts of politicians, celebrities, journalists, and other public figures. But last year it launched a subscription option open to anyone willing to pay to help Twitter grow revenue while Musk struggles to retain advertisers.
In early December, Musk announced that Twitter’s basic blue tick will have half as many ads, and the social media platform will offer a higher tier of no ads by next year.
Musk had that too specified that Twitter would limit voting on policy-related polls to paying Twitter Blue subscribers, the same day users voted decisively in a poll for him to step down as the social media platform’s chief executive.
Twitter’s CEO had claimed he would abide by the poll’s results, but gave no details on when he would step down if the results called for it. He has not yet named a successor for the role.
Since the October acquisition, Musk has swiftly fired top management and thousands of employees, vacillated over how much to charge for the social media company’s Twitter Blue subscription service, and restored accounts that were suspended under previous management, including that of former US President Donald Trump.
