The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) announced June 5 that it has allocated more than $570 million in funding for the Railroad Crossing Elimination (RCE) Grant Program 63 infrastructure projects in 32 states. The first round of funding aims to reduce collisions between trains and vehicles and blocked level crossings.
In addition to projects to build or modernize railway infrastructure, the FRA also awarded RCE US$15.7 million for planning activities and an additional US$33.1 million for future project development and design activities.
According to the Department of Transportation, more funds will be paid into the RCE program each year for the next four years. Project selections for other grant programs focused on improving rail safety, strengthening supply chains and expanding the rail passenger network will be announced in the coming months.
“As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, we’re improving railroad crossings in communities across the country to save lives, time and resources for American families,” said US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.
