Cargo barge in the Port of Los Angeles in November

The loading volume remained soft at the Port of Los Angeles in November, when the port handled 639,344 twenty-foot units (TEUs), a 21% decrease from November 2021. Overall, the port handled 7% less cargo in the first 11 months of 2022 than last year.

“Imports to the United States have begun to level off, in addition to cargo shifted from West Coast ports due to protracted labor negotiations,” Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka said during today’s news conference. “In the coming months we will have to work harder and smarter to get cargo back. Every ship, every train, every truck has to be handled with the first class service that our customers expect and deserve.”

Loaded imports in November 2022 reached 307,080 TEU, down 24% year-on-year. Loaded exports totaled 90,116 TEU, up 9% from November 2021. Empty containers landed at 242,148 TEU, down 26% from a year earlier. Empty containers loaded at the port totaled 242,147.95 TEU, down from 325,274.65 TEU in November 2021, down 25.56%.
