A cyber attack on a Norwegian shipping company has trapped around 70 companies and 1,000 ships.

Oslo-based DNV, one of the world’s leading ship classification firms, suffered a ransomware cyberattack on January 7, according to a statement on its website. The attack did not affect the ships’ operational capability, but DNV did not explain what was disrupted.

DNV, which also offers fleet management software, is working to restore functionality to its ShipManager servers. There was no evidence other DNV data or servers were affected and the attack had been reported to the Norwegian police, it said.

Cyber threats are not new to the broader shipping and logistics industry, but the incident comes at a time when supply lines are stretched and the Russian invasion of Ukraine has brought closer scrutiny of such risks.
