Safety and compliance rank among the top concerns for trucking fleet managers so far in 2024.

Out of 489 fleet managers surveyed by employee training company JJ Keller, nearly 60% said that their chief concern is related to drivers knowing how to safely and correctly operate their vehicles. Another 23% stressed the importance of avoiding distracted driving, while 19% highlighted vehicle inspections that are correctly done and properly recorded. Additionally, more than half of fleet managers said that it was most important to them that leadership consistently prioritizes safety, while 64% said that their employer “continuously strives to improve driver and employee safety.”

In terms of rising priorities between the 2023 and 2024 survey, “drivers complying with hours-of-service (HOS) limits” saw the biggest increase, from 20% to 33%. That was also the top concern highlighted by fleet managers in the survey’s “driver knowledge” category. According to JJ Keller senior industry advisor Daran Hansen, HOS violations made up 40% of all roadside infractions that were tracked in fleet audits from 2023.
