The South Korean shipping company HMM recently launched a carbon calculation tool that can measure the amount of emissions produced by a company throughout the entirety of the freight transportation process.

According to Pulse News Korea, HMM announced that it had developed its Supply Chain Carbon Calculator January 3, allowing cargo owners to better manage the carbon footprints of their ships, trains and trucks.

“There has been a growing interest in sustainability and green transportation solutions, accelerating the need for reducing emissions,” said an HMM official. “We will continue to seek a better way to ensure full visibility of tracking carbon footprint, thereby making significant headway in reaching carbon neutrality.”

According to Port Technology International, the Supply Chain Carbon Calculator uses two different methodologies for tracking ocean and inland transportation. Ocean transportation emissions use a Clean Cargo methodology, providing a set of industry average emissions factors for maritime container transport per trade lane. The inland transportation emissions are calculated using the Global Logistics Emission Council (GLEC) framework, a methodology that reports logistics GHG footprints.

Prior to this announcement, HMM also launched a Green Sailing service that promotes environmentally friendly practices amongst businesses and cargo owners.
