Walmart is deploying 400 new electric delivery vans to serve 62 million households in Austin, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Northwest Arkansas, Orlando and San Francisco.
Walmart plans to use Chevrolet’s BrightDrop electric vans for last-mile home deliveries. The vans come equipped with blind-zone steering assist, automated doors, and a range of up to 272 miles before needing to recharge.
“Our BrightDrop vans are purpose-built to get the job done safely and efficiently while helping businesses like Walmart decarbonize their fleet,” said Sandor Piszar, the vice president for GM Envolve, the company responsible for EV offerings from Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick. “The pilot program demonstrates that at the forefront of our design are the hard-working drivers that deliver goods and services to customers every day.”
Walmart has sought to decarbonize its freight and delivery fleets across its supply chain for years, having set a goal to achieve zero emissions by 2040. The company already uses forklifts powered by liquid hydrogen at its grocery distribution centers, as well as battery-electric refrigerated trailers to transport temperature-controlled food products to stores. Walmart also rolled out hydrogen-powered electric semi-trucks for its retail fleet in Ontario, Canada in June of 2024.
