In light of his considerable achievements, Dr. Akalu has been honored many times, earning a Postdoctoral Training Award in Los Angeles, California, and two scholarships in Germany.

FOREST HILLS, NY, April 04, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Abebe Akalu has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing on years of expertise in scientific research, Dr. Akalu excels as a senior research scientist in the laboratory of Dr. Leonard Liebes at the New York University Langone School of Medicine. In addition to mentoring and training graduate students, he conducts research into anti-cancer compounds, collects and runs patient samples for analysis, and engages in RNA extraction, amplification, and optimization from sub-optimally maintained Formalin-embedded tissue. Over the years, Dr. Akalu has specialized in exposing the findings of cryptic epitopes in ECM proteins which can be used as therapeutic targets. Before collaborating with Dr. Leonard Liebes, he honed his expertise as a research associate scientist in the laboratory of Dr. Peter C. Brooks.

During the early stages of his career, Dr. Akalu gained valuable expertise in research with the University of Southern California’s Institute for Human Genetic Medicine and Greifswald University’s Virology Department. Due to his vast breadth of knowledge, he has contributed to numerous articles and book chapters, including “Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-4 differentially inhibits growth factor-induced angiogenesis,” and “The vitamin-like dietary supplement para-aminobenzoic acid enhances the antitumor activity of ionizing radiation.” Along with other industry scholars, Dr. Akalu has co-authored book chapters such as “Increasing PCR Sensitivity for Amplification from Paraffin-Embedded Tissues” in “Methods in Molecular Biology PCR Cloning.” Additionally, he has obtained several patents for inhibiting angiogenesis and tumor development.

Before starting his professional journey, Dr. Akalu earned a bachelor’s degree in general biology from an institution in Ethiopia. Subsequently, he received a master’s degree in microbiology and a PhD in virology and molecular biology from Greifswald University, Germany. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, he aligns himself with the American Association for Cancer Research and the African Virologist Association. Outside his work, Dr. Akalu trains graduate and medical students who visit his laboratory.

In light of his considerable achievements, Dr. Akalu has been honored many times, earning a Postdoctoral Training Award in Los Angeles, California, and two scholarships in Germany. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in writing a book chapter with an editorial board containing 11 Nobel Prize Winners and obtaining a patent for the STQ peptide by selecting it on the phage display library. The cornerstone of his success lies in patience, hard work, and laser focus on his research. Although he had to cease his research in 2017 for medical reasons, Dr. Akalu intends to restart his research in the coming years by utilizing his newly acquired knowledge of data analysis, artificial intelligence and programming. Similarly, he aims to parlay his expertise to the next generation of scientists.
