Allan P. Gold, PhD, NCSP, shared his professional achievements and industry expertise in TIME magazine

After nearly 50 years as an esteemed psychologist for the Reed Union School District, Dr. Gold retired in 2023.

TIBURON, CA, February 17, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Allan P. Gold, PhD, NCSP, retired district psychologist from Reed Union School District, was selected by Marquis Who’s Who for a prominent feature in the San Francisco, California, regional edition of TIME magazine.

After nearly 50 years as an esteemed psychologist for the Reed Union School District, Dr. Gold retired in 2023. Inspired by his father to become a professor, Dr. Gold’s plans shifted while working in a hospital unit during his service in the United States Army Reserve during the Vietnam War. While earning a Doctor of Philosophy in educational psychology from the University of California Berkeley, he was hired by the Reed Union School District and went on to spend the whole of his career there.

The freedom of being in a smaller district allowed Dr. Gold to meet children and faculty where they were and to truly get to know them. He ran regular sessions targeted at assisting different groups, including children of divorce, children with special needs siblings and children with sick parents.

Whether working in groups or meeting students one-on-one, Dr. Gold made an impression with his affability and sense of humor. Rather than adopting a cold, detached demeanor, he preferred interacting with kids with directness, empathy and, wherever possible, laughter. Dr. Gold also embraced the evolving standards of his profession, working to implement programs in support of LGBTQ+ students. Most notably, he launched the district’s Gender Sexuality Alliance, providing kids with a safe space to talk about their identity.

Dr. Gold’s achievements were honored with a number of accolades throughout his career. Among others, he was presented with the Outstanding School Psychologist Award from the California Association of School Psychologists twice, in 1991 and 2017, and with the Rotary Club Award in 2014.

The loyalty that Dr. Gold demonstrated to his job extended to the people he worked with. He regularly expressed his unwillingness to give up on anyone. Despite this dedication, Dr. Gold was still surprised at the praise he received during his retirement party. Caring for people came naturally to him as a psychologist, a trait that will surely continue in his post-professional life.

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS

Dr. Gold’s education began when he graduated summa cum laude from the University of California Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics. He would remain at that institution to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and earn a Doctor of Philosophy in education psychology in 1978. From 1980 to 1987, Dr. Gold returned to the University of California Berkeley to serve as an adjunct professor while continuing his work with the Reed Union School District.
