WASHINGTON, DC, August 23, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Anthony S. (Tony) Harrington has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Growing up in a small town in North Carolina, Mr. Harrington was inspired by several influential figures to pursue a career in law and public service. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar, he received a J.D. from Duke Law School, following which he served as the Assistant Dean of the Law School for two years before entering law practice. Working with former North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford, Duke President, and NC Senator, was a particular source of inspiration.
Mr. Harrington gained valuable professional experience as a senior corporate partner with the global law firm Hogan Lovells, and co-founder, director and investor in several communications companies. Likewise, he served as outside General Counsel to the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton-Gore presidential campaign. Mr. Harrington also served part-time as Chair of the President’s Intelligence Oversight Board, Vice Chair of the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, and member of the congressionally-created Commission on the Roles and Capabilities of the U.S. Intelligence Community.
Mr. Harrington then served as U.S. Ambassador to Brazil, nominated by President Clinton and confirmed by the U.S. Senate with bipartisan support in a record twelve days. During his time as ambassador, he carried out a mandate to upgrade the level of bilateral relations between the U.S. and Brazil and worked closely with both U.S. and Brazilian companies to strengthen business and economic ties. In recognition of his accomplishments, the Brazilian Government awarded him the Order of Rio Branco, Grand Cross.
In 2001, drawing on his varied experience, he co-founded the Stonebidge Group along with former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, also a former Hogan law partner. In the following years, the organization combined with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s firm and has since been providing commercial diplomacy, international strategic advice and assistance to international businesses, associations, philanthropies and governments. Mr. Harrington previously served as President and CEO and as Managing Board Chair of Albright Stonebridge Group, now part of the DGA Group.
In conjunction with his professional endeavors, Mr. Harrington serves as Co-Chair of Woodrow Wilson Center’s Brazil Institute, Trustee of the Committee for Economic Development of the Conference Board, member of the UN Foundation Global Leadership Council, and Chair Emeritus of the Brazil-U.S. Business Council of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
While his career has been filled with multiple highlights, he takes particular pride in serving as the U.S. ambassador to Brazil, appointed by President Bill Clinton and endorsed by Hillary Clinton, as close friends with Brazilian President and Mrs. Cardoso.
Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, Mr. Harrington also credits his success to many great friends and colleagues, the benefit of his legal experience, and the good fortune to be in the right places at the right times.
