Drawing on nearly a decade of expertise in the health care industry, Dr. Bangolo has distinguished himself through his work in oncology and hematology at Hackensack University Medical Center. Founded in 1888, Hackensack University Medical Center provides various types of important medical care for patients in need, such as cancer care, heart services, pain management, rehabilitation and organ transplantation. Thanks to the invaluable proficiency of its neurologists, gynecologists, orthopedists, endocrinologists and many more, the center was ranked as the best adult and children’s hospital in New Jersey for the second year in a row by U.S. News and World Report in 2024.
In his role at the John Theurer Cancer Center, part of Hackensack University Medical Center, Dr. Bangolo is responsible for visiting and advising multiple divisions in hematology and oncology, meeting with cancer patients and providing guidance in their health care decisions. He also conducts extensive cancer research with his peers to facilitate new methods of fighting the disease and treating tumors.
Known for his professional longevity, Dr. Bangolo’s storied career began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where he was born. He completed a clinical clerkship at Ngaliema Clinic in Kinshasa in 2016 and earned an MD at Tianjin Medical University in China, moving to the United States to continue his medical pursuits. From 2019 to 2020, he successfully finished an interventional radiology and pain management observership at the Vascular, Interventional and Pain Clinic, a nephrology and internal medicine observership at Norton’s Suburban Hospital, and an endocrinology and internal medicine externship with Endocrine Associates. He began working with the Hackensack health network in 2021, where he served in the internal medicine residency at Palisades Medical Center for three years before ascending to his current role as an oncologist at the John Theurer Cancer Center.
As a commitment to his field, Dr. Bangolo has been active with several industry-related organizations. He served as a medical educator at both Valeritas and Omnipod in Louisville and has been a resident research chair at Palisades Medical Center since 2023. He is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology and sits on the editorial board of BMC Cancer, an open access journal that publishes essential cancer and oncology research.
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Bangolo passionately pursues his writing endeavors. He has been published in over 50 medical research publications and is a reviewer for the World Journal of Clinical Oncology, the Cureus Journal of Medical Science, Annals of Medicine and Surgery, Quantitative Imaging in Medicine and Surgery, and Hindawi Case Reports in Hematology. A prominent public speaker at numerous medical conferences, he is dedicated to spreading critical research, guidance and care through as many mediums as possible.
Though he counts many professional accomplishments and has traveled across the world, Dr. Bangolo takes great pride in his roots in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Always passionate about the health care industry, he chose to focus on becoming an oncologist and hematologist precisely because his home nation had none of its own. His proudest achievement to date involved working with a medical team in the country to gather and disperse the most wide-ranging data on cancer in the DR Congo. He was also among the first medical experts to present important new data concerning stem cell boost, an encouraging approach to treatments in patients with multiple myeloma.
In looking to the future, one of Dr. Bangolo’s main goals is to deliver better quality cancer care in the DR Congo, specifically by creating a cancer registry to establish improved cancer screening methods. He aims to use the many valuable experiences he has gained by serving at the John Theurer Cancer Center to center his focus on gene therapy and stem cell transplants for patients with sickle cell disease. With his unwavering desire to provide quality health care and the knowledge he has amassed across multiple countries, he is uniquely positioned to achieve those goals and help save more lives.
