Dr. Belgorod has held distinctive roles in the fields of ophthalmology and academia for numerous decades, having served as the owner of a private ophthalmology practice, Barry Miles Belgorod, MD, P.C., in New York City since 1981. Focusing his practice on comprehensive ophthalmic examinations, laser and microsurgery for cataracts, and medical, laser and surgical treatments for glaucoma, Dr. Belgorod is also a pioneer and patent recipient in photorefractive keratectomy surgery to correct patients’ vision.
In addition to his primary endeavors, Dr. Belgorod has been an attending medical staff member since 1981 at Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital of Lenox Hill Hospital-Northwell Health System and at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Furthermore, he has served as a clinical instructor on the faculty of ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medicine since 1981 and as a research associate in the department of chemistry at Queens College since 1997.
Notably, Dr. Belgorod is a respected, prolific researcher and patentee, holding approximately a dozen United States, Japanese and European patents in such areas as electronic LCD photochromic lenses, excimer (far UV) laser delivery systems for laser vision correction, and non-opioid analgesics and anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals. Dr. Belgorod has assumed responsibilities as an investigator and principal investigator for clinical trials and related medical innovations since the 1980s and was an invited lecturer on topics such as cataract surgery, intraocular lens implantation and emergency response for eye injuries at professional organizations, hospitals and medical institutions. Impressively, he has contributed his wealth of knowledge to professional publications and scholarly journals.
Over the course of his medical career, Dr. Belgorod has served on several committees and scientific advisory boards. He has also contributed his expertise as a consultant to organizations such as The New York Times, Amtrak, NBC and General Electric. Dr. Belgorod is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the New York Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is a highly sought-after expert in ophthalmic litigation.
EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS
Dr. Belgorod graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts from Queens College of The City University of New York in 1973 at the age of 20. He went on to complete a Doctor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania as a Jonas Salk Scholar in 1977. Following this achievement, he completed an internship in internal medicine at The Pennsylvania Hospital and a residency in ophthalmology at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital. Eminently qualified in his profession, he also completed over 50 additional courses and training since commencing his career.
AWARD HIGHLIGHTS
Dr. Belgorod has been featured prominently in New York Magazine among the Best Doctors in Ophthalmology and in Castle Connolly’s Best Doctors in Ophthalmology for many consecutive years. In 1973, he received the Ira M. Goldin Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemistry and subsequently earned the prestigious Charles A. Oliver Memorial Prize from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977 for the highest academic standing in the department of ophthalmology.
