Drawing on over two decades of expertise in medicine, Dr. King specializes in trauma and surgical critical care. Since 2020, he has found much success as a Division Chief of Burn Surgery, Medical Director of the Burn Intensive Care Unit, a Professor in the Division of Burn Surgery and Interim Chief of the Division of Acute Care & Trauma Surgery at UNC School of Medicine/UNC Health. He is responsible for treating and caring for trauma, critical, and burn patients from the eastern two-thirds of North Carolina, as well as southern Virginia and the northern part of South Carolina. Before this role, Dr. King was active as a Trauma Medical Director at the Womack Army Medical Center in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, from 2018 to 2020.
Dr. King began his career serving in the medical corps of the United States Army Reserves, where he also participated in the Army Medical Command Specialized Training Reserve Assistance Program from 1995 until 1999. He then transferred from the Reserves to the active duty ranks to serve as a captain, with his first assignment as a general surgeon at the Moncrief Army Community Hospital at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Subsequently, Dr. King was reassigned to Heidelberg, Germany, where he was deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
In 2007, Dr. King completed his trauma and surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Miami M. Miller School of Medicine. He then continued his vocation at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, where he was appointed as an associate program director of the trauma and surgical critical care fellowship program from 2008 until 2013. Between 2013 and 2018, he garnered expertise as a clinical division director of the United States Army Burn Center in Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. In his career-related endeavors, Dr. King has authored various book chapters and articles in medical journals, which specifically focused on burn injuries and trauma, emphasizing on those received in combat.
Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. King pursued an education at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at the City College of New York, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences in 1992. He continued his academic efforts at the New York University School of Medicine, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1994. Subsequently, Dr. King completed his residency in general surgery at the State University of New York in Buffalo in 1999.
Dr. King has been licensed to practice medicine in Texas, Florida, and North Carolina. As a commitment to his field, he has obtained certification in basic life support and surgical critical care and has been accredited to serve as an advanced cardiac life support instructor, an advanced burn life support instructor, an advanced trauma operative management instructor, and an advanced trauma life support instructor. Additionally, he has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the American Burn Association, the American College of Surgeons, the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Society of Black Academic Surgeons. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Dr. King contributes to various burn centers and charities for burn victims.
Well-regarded for his contributions to the field, Dr. King has earned two Legion of Merit Awards, two Bronze Star Medals, and four Meritorious Service Medals, among multiple other military honors and awards. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud of his military service as a decorated colonel who has served in the United States Army for over 20 years. Reflecting on a long career, he attributes much of his success to his spirituality.
