Dr. Burns, a distinguished educator and researcher, has dedicated nearly three decades to the field of education. Since 2023, she has served as a mathematics, business and accounting educator at Cleveland Independent School District. Committed to helping high school students achieve their academic goals, her daily responsibilities include teaching financial mathematics and accounting, grading papers and attending meetings. Dr. Burns’s career is marked by a profound dedication to education and research.

Before transitioning to her school district, Dr. Burns was a substitute teacher at New Caney Independent School District from 2009 to 2017. Her earlier teaching experience included positions at Dekaney High School in the Spring Independent School District from 2014 to 2015 and as an adjunct accounting faculty member at Lone Star College between 2009 and 2014. She also taught developmental mathematics at San Jacinto College in 2009.

Dr. Burns’s career in higher education began in 1998 when she tutored and served as a research assistant at the University of Houston. Over the next decade, she held faculty appointments at North Harris College, the Juan B. Galaviz Charter School, the Klein Independent School District, and the Huntsville Independent School District.

In addition to her educational roles, Dr. Burns has held various positions in the business sector. She was a tax preparer for Clayborn Enterprises in 2017, a tax researcher as a PhD student at Northcentral University between 2015 and 2019, and a tax preparer at Brenner & Elsea-Mandojana LLC from 2013 to 2014. Dr. Burns also garnered success as a federal accounts bookkeeper for Splendora Independent School District between 2009 and 2011 and worked with Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. from 2009 to 2010.

Dr. Burns’s academic achievements are extensive and include Bachelor of Arts in mathematics, a master’s degree in accountancy and a Master of Business Administration in finance from the Univerity of Houston. She also earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Northcentral University in 2019. Dr. Burns’s certifications include classroom teacher credentials for business education and mathematics for grades six through 12 and several leadership certificates from The National Society of Leadership and Success. She is pursuing a certified public accountant credential to advance her career.

Dr. Burns is involved civically as a donor to the National Shrine of Saint Jude. She has received numerous awards highlighting her achievements, including Outstanding Pledge from the Accounting Society. Dr. Burns plans to continue teaching and engaging in further research endeavors. She attributes her remarkable success thus far to her experience as an educator, her curiosity for learning, and her passion for the field.
