Derek Fromson is the Principal of Digital Dominoes Consulting, serving as a senior digital and offline strategist for Fortune 500 clients, international development organizations, and healthcare nonprofits on strategic planning, branding, communications strategy, stakeholder expertise, and engagement. Combining insights from more than 30 years in communications with experience in print and digital journalism, corporate communications, higher education, and international development, Mr. Fromson works with clients to tell better stories, express ideas more creatively, write clearly and succinctly and present more confidently, tailored for the appropriate channels and audiences. Before forming Digital Dominoes Consulting in 2016, Mr. Fromson led the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) as Director of Communications in all matters related to Corporate Communications, including digital strategy, social media, public affairs, multimedia, publications, design and brand integrity of the Organization. Before joining PAHO, Mr. Fromson served as Head, External Digital Communications, Open Financial Data, Controller’s Office at the World Bank. At the World Bank, Mr. Fromson led the design, development, and management efforts of the Controller’s external/internal communications and online social platforms on financial open data through collaboration with stakeholders for the World Bank Group Finances team. He liaised with the External Relations team and Finance Partners across five units to drive relevant communications efforts.

Earlier, Mr. Fromson was Senior Manager and Consultant, Global Marketing and Web Communications for Korn Ferry, the world’s largest executive search firm, where he oversaw global web operations and managed redesign projects, content strategy, web analytics, and the company’s social media presence. Previously, Mr. Fromson managed content and strategic issues for the website at Occidental College, a prestigious liberal arts institution in Los Angeles. For more than a decade, Mr. Fromson worked online and in print for major news organizations, including the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, and several Spanish-language newspapers in Mexico City and along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Derek earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley, a Master’s degree in Regional Planning with an emphasis in international development and environmental issues from Cornell University, and a Master of Business Administration specializing in Executive Management and Leadership from The Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California.

Additionally, through various organizations, Mr. Fromson became certified in web analytics, data exploration and storytelling, and podcasting. In recognition of his professional achievements, Mr. Fromson has earned numerous awards, including an Award of Excellence from the Society of News Design for his work at the Washington Post and a Top of the Times Award from the Los Angeles Times. Likewise, Mr. Fromson was recognized with the Prism Award of Excellence by the Public Relations Society of America and the Mercury Award by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for his work with Korn Ferry, a Vice Presidential Unit Team Award from the World Bank, and the International Human Rights Day Award from the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization.

Driven to remain abreast of changes in Strategic Communications, Mr. Fromson has aligned himself at different stages of his career with the Communications Network, the Online News Association, and the Society of News Design. In conjunction with his work, he has dedicated himself to his community leading fundraising initiatives as a PTA member at his daughter’s high school; as a stroke-and-turn official for USA Swimming; an age group swim coach for The Capitol Sea Devils and Tollefson Swimming; as manager of a BCC Little League team; as a Cubmaster for the Boy Scouts of America; and as assistant manager for the Capitol City Little League and the Montgomery County Little League of Maryland.

Mr. Fromson pursued his passion for open water swimming by becoming a certified coach and certified CPR/lifeguard, with training in athletic protection and concussion protocol. Aside from open water swimming and competing in prestigious swim races such as Escape from Alcatraz in San Francisco, the Greater Chesapeake Bay Swim in Maryland, the Big Shoulders Swim in Chicago’s Lake Michigan, and assorted other distances in the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, Mr. Fromson offers private swim lessons to adults, from beginners to more advanced swimmers.

While his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. Fromson, fluent in Spanish, takes the most pride in one of his earliest roles when he managed a team of local reporters for one of Mexico’s leading Spanish-language newspapers. A month after the newspaper’s launch, Luis Donaldo Colosio, the leading presidential candidate in Mexico, was assassinated. His team and the entire newspaper staff sprang into action to cover the story and revamped the edition’s entire content in five hours. Other cherished moments in his career include leading a team of 30 people at the Pan American Health Organization, breaking down organizational barriers by effectively liaising across various departments, learning HTML, Javascript, and coding to collaborate more effectively with his colleagues in IT, and creating a leadership tool called “3 x 3 x 3,” which encourages people to focus on their strengths and weaknesses while also setting personal, aspirational goals.

The cornerstone of Mr. Fromson’s success lies in his humility and ability to foster community with the people around him, his willingness to take risks, and his agility in the workplace. Mr. Fromson also advocates for a better understanding of the dos and don’ts of when and how to best use artificial intelligence in communications and parlay his growing expertise to others through articles, podcasts, and speaking engagements.
