ALBUQUERQUE, NM, June 28, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Dr. Joseph G. R. Martinez was selected by Marquis Who’s Who for a prominent feature in the Southern California Edition of The Wall Street Journal on February 28, 2024.
Long motivated by a passion for mathematics, particularly in algebra, Dr. Martinez has earned distinction as an educator throughout the course of his career. Initially drawn to psychology, he eventually shifted his professional focus to mathematics. Ultimately, Dr. Martinez’s career path was guided by the understanding that students frequently needed more assistance in mathematics compared to other educational domains.
After serving as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968, Dr. Martinez embarked on his collegiate journey at the University of New Mexico, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, with a minor in English, in 1973. During this period, he became a member of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Continuing his studies at UNM, he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in 1980 and was nominated for the distinguished Popejoy Dissertation Prize, which recognized his dissertation on research design and statistical analysis.
Dr. Martinez began his academic journey at the University of New Mexico in 1974, where he initially served as a teaching assistant. After completing his doctorate, he transitioned to the University of Albuquerque, excelling as an assistant professor and chairman of the mathematics department from 1982 to 1985.
Dr. Martinez subsequently taught mathematics at the Valencia campus of the University of New Mexico for one year. Following this period, he advanced to the position of assistant professor of educational foundations at the University of New Mexico College of Education between 1986 and 1988. His academic journey continued with roles as an associate professor in the same specialty from 1989 until 1992, an associate professor of psychological foundations from 1992 to 1993, and an associate professor of mathematics, science, and education between 1993 and 1995. Impressively, Dr. Martinez earned the esteemed title of professor of mathematics, science, and technology education in 1995 and continued to teach graduate-level statistical analysis until his retirement in 2012.
Adjacent to his primary vocation, Dr. Martinez frequently collaborated with his wife, Nancy Jean Conrad Martinez, in writing more than 250 publications, some of which were presented at national and international conferences. He also co-authored the book “Math Without Fear: A Guide for Preventing Math Anxiety in Children,” an examination of the relationship between cognition and emotion in mathematics learning. Additionally, Dr. Martinez is the co-author of “The Narrow Way” series of books, which serve as a theological-psychological-philosophical analysis of end-times.
As part of his scholarly contributions, Dr. Martinez has also served as a referee and reviewer for several teaching publications, including Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School and Mathematics Teacher. Likewise, he sat on the editorial board for the Journal of College Reading and Learning from 1984 to 1989.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Martinez has received over 70 honors, accolades, and recognitions. Notably, in 1998, he was awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Additionally, he earned Merit Awards spanning from 1997 to 2009, as well as in 2011.
In accounting for his success, Dr. Martinez largely credits his deep and abiding Christian faith, as well as the love and support of his late wife. Likewise, he is proud to have always persevered in all of his endeavors. Looking ahead, Dr. Martinez aspires to continue publishing new written works.
