With a notable career spanning over four decades, Dr. Sutter has made significant contributions to the field of cardiac surgery, particularly in the areas of robotic surgery and beating heart surgery. Currently serving as the chief of cardiac surgery at Lankenau Medical Center in the Main Line Health system, he has developed and implemented minimally invasive techniques that have revolutionized patient care. His pioneering work allows for cardiac procedures to be robotically performed while the heart continues to beat, a method that significantly reduces recovery time and improves outcomes for patients.
Dr. Sutter’s journey in medicine began with his role as a surgeon at Lankenau Medical Center, serving in his present role since 2001. With the help of his dedicated team, he has successfully performed over 2,000 robotic coronary bypass procedures since 2005 and was involved in the Hybrid Coronary Revascularization clinic trial in 2017. In addition to his medical practice, he is also a clinical professor of surgery at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
Dr. Sutter’s professional affiliations reflect his standing in the medical community. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and maintains memberships with several prestigious organizations, including the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Surgeons, the American Heart Association, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Dr Sutter’s career is underpinned by his extensive education. He completed a residency in thoracic surgery at Thomas Jefferson University in 1986 after finishing a residency in surgery at Sidney Kimmel Medical College in 1983. He previously earned a Doctor of Osteopathy from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1976 and also holds a bachelor’s degree from La Salle University.
A contributor to medical literature through several publications, Dr. Sutter has been recognized for his achievements with several awards, including a presidential citation from the American Osteopathic Association, the O.J. Snyder Memorial Medal presented by the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Roland Holroyd Award from La Salle University. He has also been named Top Doctor by Main Line Today for 10 consecutive years.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Sutter enjoys surfing and rowing. He nearly qualified to row in the Olympics in 1976 and has continued to participate in races over the years, winning the world masters for rowing in 2006. He believes that his success in both his hobbies and professional life is a result of his unwavering commitment to excellence in whatever endeavor he undertakes.
