TROY, MI, March 21, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Gordon E. MacKinnon, PhD, is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen from among a pool of the most prominent professionals and are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Since 1997, Dr. MacKinnon has maintained a private practice as a licensed clinical psychologist with his firm MacKinnon Psychological Associates, where he deploys special expertise in marriage, family therapy and trauma. A dedicated educator as well, he remained dedicated to his professorship in the Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences at Rochester University from 1997 to 2021 before being promoted to the rank of professor emeritus in 2021. Dr. MacKinnon also accepted an administrative appointment with the department, serving as chair from 2005 to 2020, and he was the director of the MacKinnon Psychology and Counseling Clinic, which the university named after him in 2017.

Dr. MacKinnon’s academic credentials are impressive, and his connections to Rochester University are extensive; in fact, he completed a Bachelor of Science in religious education at the institution in 1981. He next attended Oakland University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in human resources development, then finished a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Wayne State University in 1987. Dr. MacKinnon’s terminal degree hails from the University of Detroit Mercy, where he completed the rigorous doctoral program in clinical psychology to earn a PhD.

Recently retired from university teaching, Dr. Mackinnon’s course offerings were historically broad and included delivery of expert instruction in advanced classes in thought and practice to undergraduate enrollees. Students engaged with him on both general and niche subjects including the psychology of religion, adolescent development, lifespan development and substance abuse and addictive behaviors. Moreover, Dr. MacKinnon exposed students to ethics in behavioral science, psychological assessment and topics surrounding the transition to adulthood and aging. He was recently appointed to an adjunct Faculty position at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.

Still active in private practice, Dr. MacKinnon continues to treat a broad population that includes adult, adolescent and youth patients. Many seek his expertise in response to a distinct traumatic experience; thus, he endeavors to direct each interaction toward personalized, focused therapy protocols that deliver the best possible outcomes. He also accumulated critical experience in psychiatric hospitals, developing deep expertise in neuropsychological evaluation as well as marital and family therapy, and Dr. MacKinnon credits his genuine interest in people’s stories for his success in his clinical work.

Dr. MacKinnon is driven by ethics and thrives on the intersection of his professional activities, noting how his teaching experiences inform his interactions with patients in private practice and, conversely, how his students benefit from his clinical work. His achievements with sound, inventive methods have prompted numerous commendations across his impressive career, including the inaugural Award for Faculty Excellence at Rochester University in 2022 and the Distinguished Faculty of the Year recognition in 2014.

A passion for research and writing has proven central to Dr. MacKinnon’s legacy, and he proudly contributes to the field through important studies. He is the author of “The Role of Creative Arts in Fostering Resistance, Resilience, and Survival: Lessons From the Terezin Holocaust Experience”; moreover, he recently expanded his creative scope to develop a one-act play based on the correspondence between Freud and Einstein about the impetus for war. Looking to the future, Dr. MacKinnon plans to remain active in private practice, even after retirement from his role in the campus clinic. He also aims to persist in his consultancy roles and continue to participate in ongoing scholarly conversations by publishing new research about how the creative arts ameliorate trauma, which he expects to publish in the Journal of Health and Human Experience.
