He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1985, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Delaware in 1991.

Mr. Hull is a distinguished sculptor and educator. He currently serves as the dean at Herron School of Art and Design, Indiana University Indianapolis. Since 2020, he has overseen the school and guided it through significant changes, including integrating a music department. His leadership has been instrumental in expanding the school’s offerings to include music therapy and music technology, complementing the existing art therapy program and the other art and design programs.
Mr. Hull’s career at Herron School of Art and Design began in 1998 when he joined as a professor of sculpture. Over the years, he has held various roles, including chair of fine arts from 2017 to 2020. In addition to his responsibilities in academia, he is an accomplished artist and has owned GEO Studios LLC since 1997. His expertise in interactive, kinetic, and time-based media, including light, sound, and video, has earned him recognition in the field.
One notable achievement has been his work with ALS patients, creating digital tools that allow them to produce dynamic digital art at a time when they can no longer use traditional art-making tools. He uses eye tracking, breath sensors, and other methods. This innovative approach has given patients a sense of control over their environment despite their physical limitations.
Additionally, he was part of a group of artists chosen to create work for the new Indianapolis International Airport. His sculpture “Breath,” a kinetic work that opens and closes at the rate of relaxed human respiration was installed in 2008. Throughout his career, Mr. Hull has provided professional experiences for students through public art projects. Recently, he helped lead a student project for the airport celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Indianapolis International Center. This work, “Blue Skies” was installed in the main terminal of the airport.
Laying the groundwork for Mr. Hull’s professional success was his educational background. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1985, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Delaware in 1991. He attributes his success to his mentors and colleagues and believes art has significantly contributed to his overall wellness and health. Having grown up surrounded by art, he aims to make it accessible to everyone and emphasizes its positive impact on individuals’ lives.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Mr. Hull is actively involved in various civic efforts and artistic projects in Indiana. He has received numerous awards, including the Bicentennial Medal for Distinguished Service from Indiana University in 2020, the Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship, and two Creative Renewal Arts Fellowships. He was also one of two inaugural recipients of the Transformational Impact Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis.
Mr. Hull holds several memberships that support his professional endeavors, including with the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the Culture and Education Association, and the Indiana University Alliance of Distinguished and Titled Professors. He holds the title “The Valerie Eickmeier Professor in Sculpture”. In addition, he serves as a commissioner on the Indiana Arts Commission. His notable projects include “Breath,” “Amelia’s Gate (a memorial for Amelia Earhart),” “Aurora,” (an interactive neon sculpture), “Night Orchid” (a wind-powered kinetic sculpture), and “Vicarious,” (a kinetic neon sculpture), all works that reflect his commitment to creating engaging public art that offers unique experiences to viewers.
Looking ahead, Mr. Hull is committed to expanding his work around ALS. He believes he can provide value to patients by giving them resources to express themselves at crucial times in their lives. He strongly advocates for incorporating the arts into STEM fields, promoting STEAM education to highlight the importance of creativity alongside science and technology.
