Drawing on more than two decades of expertise in civil and environmental engineering, systems analysis, management science/operations research, infrastructure sustainability, and project management, Dr. Avetisyan presently excels as the founder and owner of Estimate and Build (www.estimateandbuild.com) and as an associate professor with California State University, Fullerton. His company offers consulting services to both public and private sectors for project management, managerial decision-making, cost minimization, profit maximization, resource allocation through non-traditional mathematical-economic modeling that provides non-intuitive yet cost effective solutions. As a professor, he teaches a number of courses, applies for grants for research grants, and works with students outside of the classroom. Additionally, Dr. Avetisyan is a faculty adviser for three student chapters and is involved with many university committees. Before obtaining his current role at the University as associate professor, he worked as an assistant professor. He also served as program coordinator for Engineering Management Graduate Program at California State University Fullerton.

During the early stages of his career, Dr. Avetisyan gained valuable expertise in education, research, and engineering with the University of Maryland College Park, Ohio University, the Chilingarian Design and Construction Company, and Vahagn and Samvel Co. Throughout his career, Dr. Avetisyan has made many notable contributions to the institutions with which he has worked. In addition to expanding the World Gas Model to account for carbon cost effects on the natural gas market at the University of Maryland, he conducted research on transportation and construction industries for sustainable policy development and analysis. He also studied the industrial construction industry in regard to its carbon footprint and good practices while at Ohio University.

An expert in his field, Dr. Avetisyan earned a Master of Engineering and PhD in civil engineering from the Yerevan State University of Architecture and Construction in 2006. Subsequently, he expanded upon his professional knowledge by earning a Master of Science in environmental studies and a Master of Science in construction engineering from Ohio University. He also received a PhD in project management at the department of civil and environmental engineering from the University of Maryland College Park in 2013. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Avetisyan maintains alignment with several professional organizations, including the Design-Build Institute of America and the Construction Management Association of America.

Due to his vast breadth of knowledge, Dr. Avetisyan has contributed to a number of publications, including “Decision Models to Support Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction from Transportation Construction Projects,” “Effects of Vehicle Technologies, Traffic Volume Changes, Incidents and Work Zones on Greenhouse Gas Emissions Production,” and “Beyond Agile: Construction Cost Minimization through Optimal and Informed Risk Management, Contractual Agreements and Negotiations.” In light of his outstanding body of work, he won the Best Paper Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Journal of Construction Engineering and Management in 2013, which was one of the highlights of his career. Similarly, Dr. Avetisyan was honored by California State University, Fullerton, and the American Coal Ash Association. Looking toward the future, Dr. Avetisyan intends to establish a construction management program at his university.
