LEESBURG, VA, January 08, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Harold E. Butler, Jr. has been inducted into Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Butler is a transformative leader who heads the Diverse Financial Institutions Group (DFIG) at Citi, where he undertakes efforts to help the financial services group reduce the racial wealth gap in the United States. Under his guidance since 2022, the DFIG strives to institutionalize diverse banks, broker-dealers and asset managers into Citi’s franchise while collaborating with Minority Depository Institutions (MDI) to expand banking and access to credit in communities of color. Mr. Butler co-wrote the Treasury Mentor Protégé program with the Department of Treasury. Its goal was to help facilitate small diverse bank inclusion in large intra-government and citizens facing payment and receceivables platforms. He also created a secondment program that lends Citi executives to partner firms.
Adjacent to his role at the DFIG, Mr. Butler has served as a managing director at Citi since 2006. Inspired by the tragic events surrounding George Floyd in 2020, he expanded his focus in equity, diversity and inclusion; as a result, he became a leader in Citigroup’s capital markets business, where his primary mission is to facilitate access to capital markets for Black, Asian, Hispanic and women-led firms and disabled enterprises. In this capacity, he has facilitated approximately $3 billion in revenue-generating prospects while broadening the horizons of these firms and encouraging them to explore new possibilities beyond their traditional focus on retail banking. Among his numerous accomplishments at Citi, Mr. Butler is also proud of his role in establishing the learning institute which benefits their partner institutions, banks and broker dealers.
Before joining Citi in 2006, Mr. Butler spent a decade as strategic business development manager at Microsoft and served as lead technologist for the security and sales trading group at Freddie Mac. A proud veteran, he also served for eight years in the United States Army.
As a diplomatic leader who values relationships, Mr. Butler believes in the importance of voicing one’s opinions and being true to oneself. He strives to foster a culture of open communication and emphasizes the value of listening and being responsive. He also acknowledges the importance of mentorship in achieving success.
Mr. Butler holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Maryland. He went on to obtain several professional credentials, including completion of the Columbia Business School Implementing Winning Strategies program and the McKinsey & Company Black Executive Leadership Program. He earned the Wall Street Projects Impact Award.
Outside of work, Mr. Butler enjoys spending time with his wife and two children and previously served as a trustee for Prep for Prep and as Chair of the National Bankers Association Advisory Board. In his free time, he supports veterans initiatives, and engages the community through a number of activities as part of a fraternity.
In the coming years, Mr. Butler strives to facilitate a transformation at Citi that promotes a level playing field in the industry, ensuring that diverse firms and individuals have opportunities to compete based on merit. Additionally, he seeks to inspire and support the next generation of diverse talent entering the industry by debunking the notion that success is exclusive to those with specific educational or professional backgrounds. Ultimately, his vision is to foster an inclusive environment that embraces and celebrates our differences because creating parity is good for the community, business, the economy and humanity.
