Dr. Gerber’s judicial career spanned 22 years until his retirement in 2001. During this time, he was known for his careful preparation and fair rulings on legal matters, with his decisions on the Court of Appeals documented in law books. After retiring from the bench, he continued to contribute to the field by working at a law firm in Phoenix, Arizona, before dedicating himself to full-time arbitration work.

Academically, Dr. Gerber earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Universite catholique de Louvain in Belgium in 1967, where he was also a Fulbright Scholar. He also holds a Master of Laws from the University of Virginia and a Juris Doctor from the University of Notre Dame. Additionally, he completed a master’s degree in comparative literature at Columbia University and both a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree at Saint Louis University. He attributes much of his success to his education, along with his supportive family.

Dr. Gerber is an active member of several organizations, including the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Arizona, the State Bar of California, IANDS, Amnesty International and the Sierra Club. His commitment to civic engagement is evident through his volunteer work as a reading and writing teacher for inmates at a local jail.

In addition to his legal career, Dr. Gerber is an accomplished author with seven published books. His works include “The Top Ten Death Penalty Myths: The Politics of Crime Control,” “Legalizing Marijuana,” “The Railroad and the Canyon,” “Lawyers, Courts and Professionalism,” “The Insanity Defense,” “Criminal Law of Arizona” and “Contemporary Punishment.” He has received recognition for his publications, including an award from the State Bar of Arizona for his two-volume book on criminal law.

In his personal life, Dr. Gerber enjoys hiking with his wife and playing tennis. He is the proud father of four children who have pursued meaningful careers: a lawyer in New York, a psychotherapist in Denver, a nurse in Southern California, and a grade school teacher in Northern California. With five grandchildren, his family remains central to his life. Looking ahead, Dr. Gerber aims to maintain good health through daily exercise while continuing volunteer work.
