Mr. Palmer is a master horse trainer and the owner of J. Palmer Performance Horses in southern Utah. With over four decades of experience, he has become uniquely acclaimed in multiple arenas, including quarter-horse racing, barrel racing and reining. His expertise extends beyond the equestrian world, as he is also a bestselling author and sought-after speaker. Utilizing the lessons he has gained from working with thousands of horses, he helps his human clients learn how to reach their own finish lines as the best versions of themselves.
Mr. Palmer’s journey began at the age of 10 when he found solace in horses after a life-changing accident left him feeling disconnected from the world. Bullied and ostracized, he withdrew from society until he discovered the sanctuary and strength provided by horses. His career started with 4-H and progressed to the American Quarter Horse Association at just 11 years old, where he showcased his talent in various disciplines such as halter, English pleasure and Western horsemanship.
By the age of 14, Mr. Palmer had delved into the world of racehorses, pursuing his dream of becoming a revered jockey for a decade. His impressive track record includes notable wins such as Best Rider of the Meet and Best Rider of the Year, propelling him to become one of the foremost jockeys in the industry. Upon retiring from his career as a jockey, he channeled his dedication into training performance horses both on the track and in the arena, honing his expertise with barrels and reining horses.
In 2009, Mr. Palmer founded J. Palmer Performance Horses, where he brings 15 years of invaluable experience in the horse industry. Previously, he successfully managed a construction company specializing in landscaping for large commercial projects and custom residential homes over 15 years. However, his passion for horses led him to fully dedicate himself to the equine world. Currently, he works as a full-time trainer specializing in reining, barrel racing and track training.
Mr. Palmer’s remarkable achievements include meticulously preparing and training 14 horses for the prestigious Triple Crown of quarter-horse racing, with many securing top three positions. His exceptional coaching has propelled numerous riders and their horses to dominate in barrel racing, securing the number one position in three national finals. Additionally, he mentors young riders aged 8 to 18, showcasing his passion for nurturing talent across different generations.
As an author, Mr. Palmer published “The Finish Line: Discover the Grit to Live an Empowered Life” in 2024 through J Palmer Performance Horses. He is also a member of the National Reining Horse Association and has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including AQHA World Championships in Western Horsemanship and Halter Showmanship, Intermountain Regional Championships in English Equitation, Leading Jockey titles in Nevada and Utah, and a Reserve World Championship at the Paint World Show in 2002.
Looking ahead, Mr. Palmer is determined to witness the publication of a revolutionary book within the National Reining Horse Association industry in collaboration with his wife and fellow students.
