Mr. Phillips has built a distinguished career in occupational safety and health, spanning nearly two decades. Currently, he serves as the senior director of safety at Herc Rentals Inc., a role he assumed in 2024. Mr. Phillips leads a dedicated team of 16 safety and DOT professionals, implementing effective practices across the organization. His journey with Herc Rentals Inc. began in 2019 as a regional safety manager, where he quickly showcased his expertise and leadership. In 2020, he was promoted to senior regional safety manager, overseeing safety for multiple regions. By 2022, he advanced to director of safety, managing safety for various regions and business segments. He frequently collaborates with sales professionals to attend customer meetings and events, delivering customized solutions and expert insights that showcase how the team can truly make a difference.

Before joining Herc Rentals, Mr. Phillips gained valuable experience as the corporate health, safety, and environmental manager at Construction & Turnaround Services (CTS) from 2016 to 2019. His tenure was marked by significant contributions, including developing policies and procedures that helped CTS achieve its first-ever year without a recordable injury. He introduced team-based concepts and best practices to engage operational leaders and foster communication, effectively reducing risk exposure. Mr. Phillips oversaw a team of 23 safety professionals and was a trusted advisor to senior leadership, providing guidance and direction. He was selected to represent CTS as a committee member with the North American Board for The Association of Union Constructors (TAUC) in Virginia, where he played a pivotal role in refining and shaping legislation to improve safety practices. This experience was particularly enriching for Mr. Phillips, allowing him to leverage his unique expertise to contribute valuable insights to discussions on enhancing safety at a macro level.

Mr. Phillips began his career in the United States Army, serving 15 years on active duty and the National Guard. His roles included military police investigator, platoon sergeant, and noncommissioned officer in charge of operations, with multiple deployments. As a military police investigator, Mr. Phillips collaborated with various civilian and government agencies to conduct thorough investigations, ensuring the enforcement of laws and regulations and maintaining safety and security. The Army imparted numerous valuable lessons that have benefited him throughout his career, such as discipline, time management, leadership, adaptability, and resilience. Mr. Phillips also credits his military service for honing his problem-solving, critical thinking, and effective communication skills. While in the National Guard, Mr. Phillips worked as a process operator in refineries and as an occupational safety and health field training instructor and consultant. This allowed him to further his experience in workplace health and safety, hazardous work safety, and chemical safety.

As a result of his career trajectory and involvement, Mr. Phillips is actively involved in numerous industry-related and veteran organizations, including the American Society of Safety Professionals, the American Rental Association, the National Safety Council, the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, and the Institute for Hazardous Materials Management. These affiliations reflect his commitment to continuous learning, improvement, and professional development within the field of occupational safety and health. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University. He has attended Harvard University’s T. H. Chan School of Public Health for continuing education centered around management and leadership.

Mr. Phillips has obtained numerous certifications from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and the Institute for Hazardous Materials Management, in addition to completing coursework for health, safety, and environmental professionals from multiple institutions. His academic achievements and certifications have been instrumental in his success, providing him with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in his career. He is an avid supporter of continuous improvement and learning. His mentors have played a pivotal role in his personal and professional development, offering guidance, support, knowledge sharing, and assistance with goal setting and ownership. One of the most valuable and defining moments in his career was a conversation with a mentor about what safety professionals should be: a trusted team of leaders who are proactive, professional, reliable, and accountable. Beyond his professional life, Mr. Phillips has demonstrated dedication to civic engagement through his involvement in various veteran-related and civic organizations, such as Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the National Eagle Scout Association. He has served in positions such as chairman and area representative in these organizations. He is also an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, an achievement that underscores his lifelong commitment to personal growth and community service. In his free time, he enjoys staying active and engaged in activities that help him grow personally and professionally. He also cherishes moments spent with family and friends.
