ALBUQUERQUE, NM, March 04, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Joseph G. R. Martinez, PhD, retired Regents’ Professor from the University of New Mexico College of Education, was selected by Marquis Who’s Who for a prominent feature in the Colorado regional edition of Forbes magazine.

Drawing on more than four decades of experience in mathematics education, Joseph G. R. Martinez, PhD, distinguished himself as a Regents’ Professor at the University of New Mexico (UNM) College of Education from 1986 until his retirement in 2012. Throughout his career, he sought to convey the principles of high-level mathematics in a way that his students could intuitively grasp, and spread his advice to fellow educators in the form of several books, including “Math Without Fear: A Guide for Preventing Math Anxiety in Children,” which he wrote alongside his wife, Nancy, in 1996. Other written works to his credit include “Activities for Mathematical Thinking,” “Reading and Writing to Learn Mathematics,” and “Teaching Mathematics in Elementary and Middle School,” among several others.

In addition to his tenure at UNM, Dr. Martinez was a professor of mathematics at various academic institutions, including the University of New Mexico-Valencia, National College, and the University of Albuquerque, where he notably served as the director of the Reading Laboratory from 1978 to 1979. Outside of his primary endeavors, he contributed to such publications as the College of Mathematics Journal, Mathematics Teacher, and Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School. Likewise, Dr. Martinez served on the editorial board of the Journal of College Reading and Learning.

While coming of age, Dr. Martinez benefited richly from the tutelage of his elementary school mathematics teacher, Sister Laetitia, who taught him the meaning of humility. Her lessons impressed upon him the need to exercise patience and sensitivity when responding to the needs of his students. Throughout his own academic journey, Dr. Martinez was proud to be nominated for the Tom L. Popejoy Dissertation Prize at UNM, which honored the quality of his doctoral dissertation. Additionally, he was gratified to earn inclusion in the honorable society of Phi Beta Kappa in 1973.

In accounting for his success, Dr. Martinez credits the influence of his dearly departed wife and his desire to exhibit excellence in his chosen field.

Dr. Martinez studied psychology and English at the University of New Mexico, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1973. Pivoting his focus to education and mathematics, he later graduated from UNM with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1980.

Well-regarded for his accomplishments, Dr. Martinez earned Merit I and Merit II awards from the College of Education at UNM from 1997 to 2009 and 2011. He was also nominated as an Outstanding Teacher of the Year by UNM in 2010. Years prior, he received a Certificate of Recognition from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1998.
