dr As an associate professor at Concordia University Chicago, Coles has made a name for himself as an associate professor, leveraging more than four decades of excellence in educational leadership and nurturing the development of other education professionals. Since 2020, she has focused her efforts on working with interns who train to become principals through the Principal Preparation Program and receive state certification. Additionally, as of 2020, she is an independent advisor for Concordia University Chicago and a valued member of the Chicago Principals and Administrators Association and the Illinois Principals Association.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Coles started her career as a third grade kindergarten teacher and then was principal of the Chicago Public Schools. She served as assistant principal of Poe Classical School until 1990 and became principal of the Keller Regional Gifted Center in 1996. In 2002 she became headmistress of the Dr. Martin Luther King College Prep High School, Advisor on Strategic Learning Initiatives from 2011 to 2017 until she retired from that role in 2006. After that time, she was a consultant for Discovery Education in 2015 and began as a Principal Coaching at the Chicago Public Schools for four years. After serving as a mentor and coach for Loyola University graduate students, she became the executive administrator of Chicago Public Schools. She has also dedicated herself to civic advocacy, providing her expertise as President of the Women’s Committee of the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center from 2015-2019.
In addition to her professional achievements, Dr. Coles is proud to have been named Teacher of the Year by Chicago State University’s Phi Delta Kappa in 2000 and to have received an Outstanding Leadership Award from the Chicago Principals and Administrators Association in 2001 and in 2002 from the Chicago Teachers Union Quest Center a Community Leadership Award and was named one of Illinois’ Most Distinguished Women by the Orrington Institute in 2019.
Before beginning her professional career, Dr. Coles earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary kindergarten education from Chicago State University (formerly Chicago Teachers College). She then earned a Master of Arts in Supervision and Administration from Roosevelt University in 1989 and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University in 2001.
dr Coles is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the oldest black sorority founded in 1908 on the Howard University campus. She enjoys her membership in the Sisterhood as they continue the work of serving all of humanity.
In the coming years, Dr. Coles to continue her work as an educator and help interns at Concordia University become effective principals. Her purpose is to help, educate, mentor, and help others grow, and pursuing her passion has brought her much joy in life.
