A former Baptist church deacon, Dr. McKinney attributes her success to the strength she has gained from her faith and strives to help others by modeling complex compassion and social justice
RENTON, WA, November 08, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Lora-Ellen McKinney, PhD has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. Dr. McKinney is a psychologist, consultant and creative who has focused on creating change through writing, visual art, and performing arts for more than two decades. Since 2021, she has been the owner of Cedar River Creative Productions, which builds on her work as an activist artist (poet, writer, dancer and songwriter) to showcase and promote the work of Black creatives across the United States. Recent projects have included virtual programs highlighting the work of African American contemporary classical composers, a selection of new children’s books by Black authors, and a ten-city arts and food benefit event. In addition to her work with Cedar River Creative Productions, Dr. McKinney has been the owner of McKinney Consultations, which provides strategic planning analyses and planning processes for faith institutions and nonprofits. She continues to support arts education.
Dr. McKinney began her career as a pediatric psychologist in medical centers, as Chief Psychologist for Harlem Hospital’s largest off-site community clinic and medical school faculty, head of the learning clinic and as hospital pediatric liaison in Behavioral Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. In 1997, she was awarded an additional Master of Public Policy degree, with a focus on public health, by the Harvard Kennedy School, and she has continued her education throughout her career with numerous professional certificates. From 1993 until 1997, Dr. McKinney was a fellow of the Kellogg National Leadership Program, an experience she considers pivotal to her professional and personal development, and from 1997 through 2000, she was a public policy lead for Community Voices: Healthcare for the Underserved, a national program funded by the Kellogg Foundation.
Dr. McKinney has been extensively published, with titles including children’s books, faith-based titles, and leadership advice as well as poetry. She has been recognized for her work in community leadership and health with fellowships from the National Association of Public Hospitals, the Salzburg Seminar, the Harvard Kennedy School, and others, and has won awards for her screenwriting, plays, and poetry. Dr. McKinney was selected for the 50th anniversary Salzburg Seminar program, which assigned Fellows the task of identifying workable solutions to the conflicts between Israeli and Palestine and Serbia and Croatia. As part of the Fulbright Senior Scholars program, Dr. McKinney interviewed women involved in dangerously non traditional roles in Pakistan’s northwest sector.
