Louis B. Cushman Celebrated for Dedication to the Real Estate Industry

With a wealth of experience in the real estate industry, Mr. Cushman has proven himself as the vice chairman of Cushman and Wakefield, the third-largest commercial real estate services firm in the world. The company was initially established by his grandfather and great-uncle in 1917. Since joining in 1967, Mr. Cushman has honed his skills in land assemblages and sales, office leasing, building sales and brokerage dealings. His mastery of commercial real estate, marketing and management has earned him a roster of long-standing clients, with his earliest client relationship dating back to 1972.

During the early stages of his career, Mr. Cushman gained valuable expertise in real estate in New York City, where he worked directly under his father at J.C. Cushman Inc. In 1978, he departed from Cushman and Wakefieldto play a key role in managing the eponymous Cushman Realty Corporation, a privately-held commercial real estate brokerage. As board chairman, the company grew to encompass nearly 200 employees across 11 offices, focusing on commercial real estate and office building development before its merger with Cushman and Wakefield in 2001.

Following Cushman and Wakefield’s acquisition in 2015, Mr. Cushman has remained active on the company’s board of directors and global advisory board. Additionally, his commitment to staying abreast of ongoing industry changes is evident in his affiliations with the Houston, Texas, and National Associations of Realtors, and the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors. Likewise, he remains a member of the Houston Office Leasing Brokers Association, for which he served as its first president in 1983. His academic background, including a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Amherst College and an MBA in finance and real estate from the University of Michigan, further solidifies his expertise in the field.

Known for his contributions as a civic-minded citizen, Mr. Cushman has been extensively involved in various community initiatives. Among them, he has served in multiple high-level positions with the Alley Theatre, the Houston Economic Development Council Inc., the Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation, the Institute of International Education, The Menil Foundation and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. Additionally, he has served on the board of directors for the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

To commemorate his accomplishments, Mr. Cushman has received several accolades. To wit, he was inducted into the 2005 “Heavy Hitters Hall of Fame” by the Houston Association of Realtors Commercial Division, and was recognized as a top producing office broker worldwide at Cushman and Wakefield in 2007. The Houston Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Parks also proclaimed him as their Office Broker of the Year in 2007, and inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2020. Mr. Cushman was also bestowed with a Landmark Lifetime Achievement Award by the Houston Business Journal in 2022.
