Driven by a passion for helping others, Dr. Valley has earned distinction for nearly four decades of excellence in the field of health care. Board-certified as an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, he practices medicine at Imperial Pain Specialists, a private clinic in Johnson City, Tennessee. Additionally, as an associate medical director for the interventional pain section at eviCore Healthcare, a provider of medical cost management services, he handles various cases, many of which consist of epidural steroid injections, spinal cord stimulators, pain pumps and interventional pain management.

Long motivated to become a doctor, Dr. Valley developed an interest in anesthesia due to his childhood experiences in hospitals. After studying biochemistry at the University of California Davis, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1980, he went on to join the United States Air Force. Serving in both active duty and as a reservist, he remained active in the military until 1996, ultimately achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. During this time, he held several administrative positions, culminating in his role as the chief medical officer at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.

Dr. Valley also studied extensively during his period of service, earning an MD at Loma Linda University in 1984 and a Master of Science in system management at the University of Southern California in 1988. He completed an internship in surgery at White Memorial Medical Center, and later undertook a residency in anesthesiology and a fellowship in pain management at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Additional academic achievements to his credit include his Master of Public Health in biostatistics at East Tennessee State University in 2012 and a Master of Arts in history at Norwich University in 2023.

Outside of his primary career endeavors, Dr. Valley has availed himself in several educational roles at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he worked as an instructor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine from 1991 to 1992, and at the the University of Texas Health Science Center, at which he taught anesthesiology until 1994. He also served as an assistant professor at the F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences during the same period. Other contributions to his credit include his consultations with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on anesthesia, as well as his ongoing work as a reviewer and analyst for various insurance companies.

To remain aware of developments in the field, Dr. Valley maintains his membership with the Spinal Injection Society and the International Neuromodulation Society. He is also a lifetime member of the American College of Physician Executives, and has been affiliated with the Spinal Injection Society, the North American Spine Society and several historical associations.

Well-regarded for his abundant scholarly rigor, Dr. Valley has contributed numerous books and chapters to works written by his colleagues. His articles and papers, meanwhile, have been published in such publications as the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Anesthesiology Review, the Journal of Clinical Monitoring, and Anesthesiology, to name only a few. His writings have also made their way into several newspapers, including The Chattanoogan and the Boston Globe. Likewise acclaimed for his presentations, he has spoken or lectured at several industry conferences and symposia since the 1990s.

In accounting for his success, Dr. Valley credits his tireless work ethic, as well as his propensity for calm analysis and efficient problem-solving. Likewise, he is grateful for the abiding influence of various mentors, as well as the love and support of his wife and children. Looking toward the future, Dr. Valley plans to eventually scale back his career efforts as he begins pivoting toward a well-deserved retirement in the years to come.
