Marlene Elisabeth Haffner, MD, MPH, shared her professional achievements and industry expertise in Forbes

Dr. Haffner was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Organization for Rare Disorders and the Vision and Policy Award from the Canadian Organization for Rare Diseases in 2014.

ROCKVILLE, MD, February 17, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Marlene Elisabeth Haffner, MD, MPH, principal and founder of Haffner Associates, LLC, was selected by Marquis Who’s Who for a prominent feature in the Baltimore, Maryland, regional edition of Forbes.

Motivated to enter the medical industry by her parents, who were both physicians, Dr. Haffner endeavored to pursue a similar vocational path to serve and impact underserved populations. Drawing upon more than 50 years of professional excellence, Dr. Haffner is well-regarded as the founder and principal of Haffner Associates LLC, a prominent organization dedicated to facilitating the development of therapies for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of rare diseases. Since 2009, Dr. Haffner and her team have worked in conjunction with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, as well as patients and patient advocacy groups, to provide drug/biological development assistance services.

Since 2003, Dr. Haffner has further lent her expertise to the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, as an adjunct professor in the department of medicine. Earlier in her career, she served as the vice president of medical services at File Bank Inc. and a member of regulatory consultants for the Kakkis EveryLife Foundation between 2009 and 2010. She also worked as the executive director of global regulatory intelligence and policy at Amgen Inc. from 2007 to 2009 and as the director of the Office of Orphan Products Development for the Food and Drug Administration from 1986 to 2007. Dr. Haffner commenced her career in 1971 with the United States Public Health Service, remaining there until 2007, retiring at the rank of Rear Admiral.

Impressively, Dr. Haffner is an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians and a member of the American Public Health Association. Serving on more than 12 different professional boards – including the board of directors for DADA 2, DeNovaMed and the Indian Organization for Rare Diseases – she is recognized for helping to create the European Rare Diseases Program and assisting with the development of the Japanese and Taiwanese programs. To wit, while at the FDA, she was professionally responsible for administrating the United States Orphan Drug Act. Looking forward, Dr. Haffner aims to continue advancing in the medical field and exerting a positive impact on underprivileged communities.

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS

Dr. Haffner first studied at Case Western Reserve University, after which she graduated from The George Washington School of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine in 1965. After accruing years in her profession, she attended the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she earned a Master of Public Health in health policy and management in 1991.

AWARD HIGHLIGHTS

Notably, Dr. Haffner was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Organization for Rare Disorders and the Vision and Policy Award from the Canadian Organization for Rare Diseases in 2014. Earlier, she earned the Woodrow Wilson Award from Johns Hopkins University in 2009 and the Special Recognition Award from the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians in 2002. Dr. Haffner also received multiple awards from the United States Public Health Service (USPHS), including the Distinguished Service Medal twice, the highest award of the USPHS.
