Lauded for his work in the arts and entertainment sector, Mr. Paul is a ten-time Grammy Award recipient and a founding member of the internationally acclaimed jazz vocal group, The Manhattan Transfer. Mr. Paul began his professional career at the age of 11 in the original Broadway cast of “Oliver.” As a child actor, he worked extensively in stage, film and TV. Wanting to further his music studies, Mr. Paul entered Kean University as a voice major/piano minor and earned a BA in Music Education. In 1992, Mr. Paul received an Honorary Doctor degree in Humane Letters from his alma mater as well as an Honorary Doctor degree from Berklee College of Music along with his Transfer partners.
After graduation, Mr. Paul returned to Broadway in the original cast of “Grease,” where he created the roles of Teen Angel and Johnny Casino. In 1972 while still appearing in “Grease” Mr. Paul met Janis Siegel, Tim Hauser and Laurel Massé, (later replaced by Cheryl Bentyne) and together formed The Manhattan Transfer. In 1975 they released their first album on Atlantic Records which propelled the group to international fame. During their tenure, they have recorded over 30 albums, including “Extensions,” “Mecca For Moderns,” “Brasil” and “Vocalese” that received 12 Grammy nominations and 3 wins. In honor of their 50th Anniversary in 2022, the group collaborated with the WDR Funkhaus Orchestra on their album “Fifty” and received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. In addition, Mr. Paul has been inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the East Coast Music Hall of Fame and received Lifetime Achievement Awards from The Society of Singers, the Barbershop Harmony Society and the National Music Council’s American Eagle Award along with his partners.
As a writer and arranger Mr. Paul is also well represented having penned such songs as “Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone,” “Code Of Ethics,” “Smile Again,” “Spies In The Night,” “All Heart,” “The Quietude,” “What Goes Around Comes Around,” “Its Good Enough To Keep,” “Stompin’ At Mahogany Hall,” “Nothin’ Could Be Hotter Than That” and “Swing Balboa (Down On Riverside).” He has also recorded two notable solo albums, “Shu Bop” and “Another Place and Time.”
Apart from his vested interest in the arts, Mr. Paul has given back and supported youth. He has notably been affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and the Boys & Girls Club in Newark, New Jersey. He has taught voice and performance at UCLA, Idyllwild Arts Academy in California and leads masterclasses and workshops internationally and teaches private voice in Los Angeles.
Mr. Paul has been active with several leading professional organizations related to his industry, including the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, NARAS and the Society of Singers. Mr. Paul is currently working on his memoir, a documentary on The Manhattan Transfer, a new solo album with plans to become more involved in coaching, producing other artists, and spending time with his wife of 43 years, author, life coach and influencer, Angela Paul and their daughter Arielle Paul, a writer and journalist with The New York Times.
