Dr. Mathews’s academic credentials are impressive and include a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Howard University, which she completed in 2007. She subsequently pursued graduate studies and earned a Master of Arts in sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010 before completing a PhD in sociology at the same institution in 2015. Dr. Mathews has also obtained certifications in artificial intelligence foundations including machine learning, digital marketing tools, and workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion.
A deep commitment to public health has shaped Dr. Mathews’s career progression and is further exemplified by her role as the former executive director of the Faith Coordinating Center, which launched the Black Faith & HIV Initiative at Wake Forest University. As executive director, she led philanthropic efforts to combat HIV-related stigma within black faith communities. Dr. Mathews’s significant contribution to public health is also reflected in her launch of the HIV Cure Research Day, a recognized event by the governor of North Carolina since 2017.
Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Mathews is actively involved in civic organizations such as the Martín Delaney CARE Community Advisory Board and the Urban League WS. She has served as a commissioner on the NC Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and as a board member for several organizations focused on community development.
