Ms. Kizzire is a highly experienced hospice nurse and the co-owner of Odonata Care LLC. She has dedicated her career to providing compassionate care and education in the field of hospice nursing. With over 35 years of experience, she is a respected presence in hospice care for pediatric and adult patients. Ms. Kizzire also serves patients and families as a full-time case manager at Providence Hospice.
Ms. Kizzire initiated her nursing career at a rural hospital in southern Oregon, where she gained her first exposure to hospice care. In 1991, she moved to Portland, and through 1995 she pursued a specialty in IV infusion while caring for patients diagnosed with AIDS. Subsequently, she relocated to Eastern Europe to serve as a nurse and Ms. Kizzire proudly established a small business and an employee health program.
Upon her return to the United States, Ms. Kizzire continued her work in hospice care for 15 years before joining Providence Health and Services as a palliative certified nurse. Recognizing the growing need for education in hospice care during the COVID-19 pandemic, she co-authored “The Hospice Care Plan: A Path to Comfort” with Nancy Heyerman; this comprehensive booklet covers medication management and symptom control and offers guidance in providing tailored, personalized care. Ms. Kizzire’s educational initiative has expanded to include over 200 videos on her dedicated YouTube channel, with one video garnering over 3.5 million views thus far.
Exceptional academic credentials have proven foundational to Ms. Kizzire’s career. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Oregon Institute of Technology in 1988, and her dedication to her profession is further exemplified by her involvement in industry-related organizations such as the Oregon Nurses Association and the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council. Additionally, Ms. Kizzire has hosted local seminars for pediatricians and pediatric nurses on managing care for terminal children.
In addition to her professional achievements, Ms. Kizzire is actively involved in civic organizations and committed to empowering others. She served as a regional supervisor for the United Fighting Art Federation and volunteers to teach women about self-defense tactics through Krav Maga. She also pursues various hobbies outside of her profession, including martial arts, and is proud to hold a sixth-degree black belt Chun Kuk Do and a black belt in Krav Maga. Ms. Kizzire also finds balance through hiking, cooking and gardening.
Ms. Kizzire attributes her success to diligence and hard work. Looking toward the future, she aims to transition from bedside care to focusing on hospice education and on advancing the marketing strategies for her hospice care publication. Ms. Kizzire will also be speaking at a national conference in Texas and plans to engage more health care professionals in hospice care opportunities.
