After more than a decade of success in legal practice, Mr. Sharpley pivoted into the financial sector. Beginning his new career in back-office operations with the assistance of a mentor, he eventually found his niche. Today, Mr. Sharpley serves as the Senior Vice President of Wholesale Banking KYC with JP Morgan Chase & Company. As the senior lead of operations, he is tasked with managing a group of managers and teams dealing with KYC “know your customer” functions which notably involves ensuring adherence to multiple regulations across the globe which safeguard the financial institution against money laundering and more.

Having garnered over 15 years of professional success in the finance industry, it was not until 2020 that Mr. Sharpley moved to the U.S. from his native South Africa. Joining Citi Bank as a Senior Vice President, he was then recruited to JP Morgan Chase & Company in 2022. Hailing from Barclays PLC in Africa where he served as the Executive Head of Financial Crimes Operations for Retail and Business Banking operations from 2015 to 2020. While with Barclays PLC, Mr. Sharpley led a team that designed a system for the KYC customer onboarding and periodic reviews, which was later recognized with an industry award. This center of excellence successfully supported 12 countries with Transaction Monitoring. Mr. Sharpley was involved in hiring and training, designing systems, and establishing operational procedures.

Mr. Sharpley began his career as an attorney, working as an article clerk for Christo Barnard Attorneys. He subsequently served as a conveyancer for Towell & Groenewalt Attorneys, property division director for Smith Tabata, and national attorney and customer service manager for Absa Group. However, many legal firms had begun to undergo cutbacks during the 2008-2009 property market crash, prompting Mr. Sharpley to explore opportunities in other fields. Looking toward future success in finance, he is eager to help contribute significant and necessary industry changes that influence the perception of regulations, the implementation of automation, machine learning, and more.

Civically active, Mr. Sharpley is a board member of J316, a sports ministry organization. He has also served on the board and as a volunteer for Restore Trust in South Africa.

In preparation for his career, Mr. Sharpley received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Western Cape in South Africa in 2002. He was also admitted to practice by the conveyancer and notary public of the High Court of South Africa in 2002 and received designation as a certified anti-money laundering specialist through the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS) in 2023.

Mr. Sharpley is a professional member of the ACAMS, the Black Lawyers Association in South Africa, the National Credit Regulator, and registered with the Cape South African Law Society. In light of his accomplishments, he received a Key Career Highlight from Absa Group Ltd. and a Black Conveyancers Association Award. Mr. Sharpley attributes his success to his drive, which stems from his upbringing in South Africa, where fundamental human rights were not guaranteed. Additionally, he notes his Christian faith and his wife for teaching him how to overcome barriers and persevere.
