Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Known for her transformative ideas in public health, Dr. Colvis is a distinguished professional in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology whose leadership has changed the world for the better. For the past 12 years, she has served as the director of the Office of Drug Development Partnership Programs at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), where she has been instrumental in collaborating with pharmaceutical companies and academic researchers to advance drug development. As the office’s founding director, she provides a vision for and management of a diverse portfolio of projects.

One of her most significant accomplishments has been the 2016 inception of the Biomedical Data Translator program, a graph-based system which aggregates data from various knowledge sources and databases, encompassing a broad spectrum from clinical information to molecular-level genetic data. The system is designed to enable more informed biomedical research and study design by helping researchers find “knowable unknowns” including drug repurposing opportunities.

Prior to her current position, Dr. Colvis served as the director for program integration at the National Institute on Drug Abuse for three years. In this capacity, she was responsible for integrating various programs to enhance research and development efforts within the institute. Before that, she held the role of program director at the same institute, where she managed and directed research initiatives aimed at understanding and combating drug abuse. Her career began as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Eye Institute, where she honed her research skills and developed a strong foundation in scientific inquiry.

Dr. Colvis’s academic journey laid a solid foundation for her successful career. She earned a doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from Oregon Health & Science University, following a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Benedictine University. She attributes much of her success to outstanding mentors including Drs. Ted Acott, Donita Garland, Linda Brady, Kathy Hudson, and Christopher P. Austin who offered exceptional opportunities and strong support from leadership, allowing her to thrive professionally.

In addition to her professional achievements, Dr. Colvis has been actively involved in industry-related organizations. She is a past member of the Society for Neuroscience and has served on the board of advisors for The Universities at Shady Grove. Additionally, she is a member of the Drug Information Association Global Annual Meeting Program Committee.

Dr. Colvis’s dedication to her field has been recognized through various accolades, including several NIH Director’s Awards and the 2021 Charles A. Sanders MD Partnership Award from the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health. This award highlights her exceptional ability to forge partnerships that drive innovation and progress in drug development.

Outside of her professional life, Dr. Colvis enjoys cooking, baking, knitting, glass work, playing cello and spending time with her dog. She is passionate about revolutionizing the utilization and communication of scientific knowledge among her peers and is striving to develop innovative strategies for repurposing drugs.
