Ms. Kman, a dedicated advocate for the freedom and proper management for the wild horses of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, has served as the president of Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates since 2021. Her commitment to the cause is evident in her full-time involvement leading the organization, where she advocates for the proper management of the approximate 200 wild horses that call the national park home. In this role, she keeps her followers informed on ways they can help support their advocacy work. This is done through compelling social media updates that utilize a variety of platforms to raise awareness, answer questions and facilitate fundraising initiatives. She also keeps the organization’s followers updated through regular blogs on their website. She and her husband Gary also manage a small retail store that pays tribute to the horses through creative merchandise offerings featuring their photographs of the wild horses. They also actively engage with the public by conducting park tours.
Ms. Kman’s journey into nonprofit work began after a successful tenure as a co-manager at Walmart from 2008 to 2019. Her transition into advocacy was driven by her passion for preserving the historic wild horse population in North Dakota. When the park announced their aggressive plan to eradicate all the horses from boundaries of the park in December of 2022, her organization, under her leadership, played a pivotal role in stopping the park’s plans. Her leadership as president of Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates non-profit organization helped develop and build relationships with her North Dakota state and federal legislators. Those relationships were instrumental in unanimously passing a state resolution in 2023 as well as federal assistance to protect the horses through the Appropriations process. Her organization’s efforts and hard work paid off in April of 2024 when the National Park Service withdrew its attempts to remove the horses from the park.
Ms. Kman is once again working with her North Dakota state legislators on legislation to help protect the horses during the 2025 session. Her organization continues to pursue federal legislation to protect this historic wild horse herd.
Her dedication to the wild horses of Theodore Roosevelt National Park was further highlighted with a feature in Bis Man Magazine.
Ms. Kman’s academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in writing from DePaul University, completed in 2002. The school recognized her outstanding efforts and commitment to excellence with the Weinberg Award the same year. She attributes much of her professional success to the unwavering support of her family and followers. She draws inspiration from Margaret Mead’s belief that even the smallest groups of people can effect positive change throughout the world through shared dedication to a cause.
In addition to her leadership role at Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates, Ms. Kman collaborates with other civic minded organizations such as the Oregon Wild Horse Organization, Save Our Wild Horses and Equine Collaborative International.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Ms. Kman enjoys photography, writing and exploring and learning about other wild horse herds. Looking to the future, she plans to continue advocating for federal legislation to protect the wild horses of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. She is also actively pursuing funding to create a sanctuary for wild horses in North Dakota, specifically the Nokota horse. As she continues to champion the cause for wild horses, she aims to complete a feasibility study as an initial step toward building a sanctuary that will ensure their protection for generations to come.
