Dr. Porter is a distinguished leader in the fields of education, diversity, equity and inclusion, and real estate development. He is the chief executive officer of Bi-Coastal Consulting LLC, a company he established in 2018 after reorganizing his previous venture, DM Porter Associates LLC. His responsibilities include developing and implementing leadership development and career coaching programs. He also serves as President of Stirrup Properties, Inc. As president of this family-owned real estate business founded by his great-grandfather, he works to provide housing for low and moderate-income families in Coconut Grove, FL.

Significant milestones mark Dr. Porter’s career. From 2021 to 2023, he was the executive vice president of strategy, people, and culture at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked with his team to develop strategies for vaccine policy implementation, ensuring a safe return to the workplace with a hybrid work schedule. Simultaneously, he worked with his colleagues to update the Bank’s strategic plan, including adopting a comprehensive plan for diversifying its workforce.

Prior to his tenure at the Federal Reserve Bank, Dr. Porter served as the chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. During his tenure, he led the effort to develop Haas’ five-year DEI Strategic Plan and worked with his faculty colleagues to hire one of the most diverse faculty cohorts in Haas’ history. Additionally, he was executive director and chief executive officer at the Walter Kaitz Foundation from 2006 to 2018, where he was recognized as one of the Top 100 Executives of Color in the cable industry.

Dr. Porter’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering from Stanford University. He furthered his education with a Master of Science in industrial engineering and a Master of Arts in sociology from Stanford University. In 1992, he earned another Master of Arts in sociology from Harvard University before completing his Doctorate in organizational behavior at Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School in 1997. He also earned several certifications, including the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications Executive Leadership Development Program from the University of Virginia Daren School of Business and Director Education and Certification Program from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

His professional affiliations are extensive. Dr. Porter has been a member of several prestigious organizations, including the Leadership Institute Board of Advisors for the Council of Urban Professionals from 2012 to 2018 and the National Advisory Board for the National Society of Black Engineers from 2000 to 2005. He was also a member of the Committee on Diversity in the Engineering Workforce at the National Academy of Engineering from 1999 to 2005. Additionally, he is affiliated with the Academy of Management, the American Sociological Association, the Society for Human Resource Management, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.

Throughout his career, Dr. Porter attributes his success to working with incredible teams united by shared goals. His collaborative approach has allowed him to make a meaningful impact across various sectors, earning widespread recognition and appreciation for his unwavering dedication.

In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Porter has made significant contributions to academia as an assistant professor at the UCLA Anderson School of Management from 1995 to 2003. In addition, he served as Faculty Director and co-creator of numerous UCLA executive education programs from 1998 to 2017. He is known for developing and implementing the UCLA African American Leadership Institute, the first executive education program of its kind at a major business school. He also served as the director of graduate programs at Howard University’s School of Business from 2003 to 2006.

Dr. Porter’s dedication extends beyond his professional life. He enjoys traveling internationally, spending quality time with his family and friends, watching movies, reading and collecting comic books.

Looking ahead, Dr. Porter hopes to take on at least one more role that has a significant impact before retiring. He remains informed about major social, business, and organizational issues, seeking opportunities to contribute meaningfully.
