Marquis Who’s Who Honors Dr. Emily Moore for Expertise in Physical Education

With a career spanning over six decades, Dr. Moore has established herself as a distinguished figure in the realm of physical education and youth development. Her journey began as a teacher at middle schools and high schools from 1968 to 1972, where she laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to education and community service. Dr. Moore then transitioned to Ulysses Byas Elementary School in Roosevelt, New York, where she served as a physical education teacher until her retirement in 2019. Throughout her tenure, she not only was dedicated to teaching but also took on the role of coach for the varsity boys and girls tennis teams, further showcasing her versatility and commitment to student athletics.

Dr. Moore’s expertise extends beyond the classroom into areas such as personal training, photography, writing, politics, Black studies, and community activism. Her proficiency in these areas is a testament to her diverse talents and her ability to inspire those around her. Dr. Moore’s achievements include being featured at Times Square and in Millennium Magazine, publishing a book of poetry titled “Just Like It Is,” and receiving numerous accolades for her contributions to civil rights and community service. Among her many awards are inductions into the 34th Annual Eastern Hall of Fame in 2021 and the Black Tennis Hall of Fame in 2019. She is the subject of the book, My Journey: The Life and Times of Dr. Emily Moore, Civil Rights Activist, Physical Educator, Philanthropist, and Hall of Famer: The Life and Times of Dr. Emily Moore, Civil Right Activist, Physical Educator, Philanthropist, and Tennis Hall of Famer” by Aynna L. Moore.

A pivotal moment in Dr. Moore’s career was her founding of the Alliance Junior Tennis Development Program in 1975. This initiative reflects her passion for using sports as a vehicle for positive change, providing children with opportunities for growth and development that they might not have had otherwise. Her efforts have been recognized by tennis legends Arthur Ashe and Althea Gibson, underscoring the impact of her work on the sport and its community.

Dr. Moore’s academic background played a crucial role in her success. She earned a Bachelor of Physical Education from Morgan State University in 1965, followed by a Master of Science in education and counseling from Hofstra University in 1972. In 2015, she achieved a Doctorate of Law with honors from Morgan State University. Additionally, Dr. Moore is certified in K-12 physical education by the State of New York.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Moore is deeply involved in civic activities. She has been an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, contributing to scholarship programs that support graduating students. Her international experiences include serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nigeria during tumultuous times and participating as an ambassador in the People to People Program in South Africa. Locally, she has been elected as a school board member for the Roosevelt School District and is involved with several organizations focused on Black world studies and community service.

Dr. Moore’s personal life is marked by her interests in reading, playing chess, writing, and photography. As she looks toward the future, she envisions continued growth for her initiatives while also enjoying her retirement. In reflecting on her journey, she attributes much of her success to her humble spirit–a quality that has endeared her to many and amplified her influence within the community. Her story is one of perseverance, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
