ATHENS, GA, March 10, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Dr. Francis L. Fluharty has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who. A distinguished expert in beef cattle nutrition, Dr. Fluharty has made significant contributions to the field through his extensive career and academic achievements. As the department head and professor at the University of Georgia since 2018, he leads and manages academic programs at the school’s Department of Animal and Dairy Science. He oversees eight farms, a federally inspected meat laboratory and a large animal research unit that uses swine to conduct traumatic brain injury research. His responsibilities also include faculty and staff hiring and supervising approximately 35 staff members and more than 30 doctoral candidates.

Prior to reaching his role at the University of Georgia, Dr. Fluharty served a remarkable 35-year tenure at The Ohio State University. During this time, he conducted groundbreaking educational research on beef cattle and sheep and connected university personnel with beef industry professionals working in production and processing centers. Earlier in his career, he spent nearly 15 years as a research scientist and coordinator for the Ohio Beef Industry Center at The Ohio State University, conducting studies on animal growth and teaching courses on feedlot management and beef production.

Dr. Fluharty’s equally accomplished academic background is also rooted in The Ohio State University, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in animal science with a focus on nutrition in 1993, a Master of Science in animal science in 1987 and a Bachelor of Science in animal science in 1982. His devotion to education is further exemplified by his certification as a diplomate of the American College of Animal Sciences by the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists in 2014.

Also a prolific writer, Dr. Fluharty has contributed more than 250 scientific publications and has given presentations on feedlot nutrition in nearly 20 different countries. Dedicated to enhancing economic opportunities for farmers, he successfully developed an extension program that has assisted approximately 1,000 small-scale beef producers by utilizing science and marketing techniques to increase the efficiency of their cattle production. Along with his education, he attributes his professional success to having a strong work ethic and passion for helping students and families involved in production.

Dr. Fluharty’s decades of service to education and beef production have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Celebration of Students Award from the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University in 2018 and the Extension Award of Merit from Gamma Sigma Delta in 2015. His commitment to innovation earned him the Innovator of the Year award from the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in 2005. Additionally, he was honored with the Beef Industry Service Award from the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association in 2003.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Fluharty is actively involved in civic organizations as a supporter of LGBTQ+ initiatives and is a contributor to the Trevor Project, the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia and various human rights campaigns. He enjoys working with farmers and spending quality time his family. Looking to the future, he intends to establish a renowned department of animal and dairy science that is recognized as one of the premier departments both nationally and internationally.
