    INDIANAPOLIS, IN, July 26, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Dr. Mark Marshall has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who. Dr. Marshall, a distinguished expert in drug development and cancer research, has made significant contributions to the field of precision medicine. Since 2016, he has served as the scientific director of the Precision Genomics Program at Riley Children’s Health. In this role, Dr. Marshall consults with oncologists treating pediatric patients with high-risk or relapsed cancer. He conducts DNA sequencing and data analysis of patient’s tumors to uncover the underlying genetic causes and identify critical mutations for diagnosis and targeted treatment.

Prior to his current position, Dr. Marshall was a Research Fellow at Lilly Research Laboratories for 16 years. During this period, he led the company’s protein kinase discovery platform as well as drug discovery teams within the cancer division. Among his accomplishments in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Marshall’s scientific leadership efforts have led to the development of one FDA approved cancer drug and three other investigational cancer drugs currently in clinical trials. Most notable of these are abemaciclib, which is FDA approved for use with certain metastatic breast cancers, and prexasertib, which has received FDA orphan drug status in anal cancer and fast track designation in drug-resistant ovarian and endometrial cancer. Dr. Marshall’s industrial research has also resulted in 11 issued patents and 13 FDA study reports.

Before moving to Lilly Research Laboratories, Dr. Marshall was a full professor at Indiana University School of Medicine and the associate scientific director at the Walther Oncology Center. He also served as vice-chairman of the biochemistry and endocrinology study section at the American Cancer Society. His primary academic focus has been on the role of oncogenes in human cancer with side interests in the evolutionary biology of theropod dinosaurs. Dr. Marshall’s nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications have been lauded for their insights into oncoprotein structure-function in cancer as well as studying the preservation of biomolecules in prehistoric materials. His early career began at Merck Research & Development, where he worked first as a postdoctoral research scientist before being promoted to senior research biochemist. His extensive experience in both academic and industrial research has solidified his reputation as a leader in his field of cancer gene function and treatment.

Dr. Marshall’s educational background is equally impressive. He earned a PhD in molecular biology from Princeton University in 1986, following a Master of Science in microbiology from Brigham Young University in 1982 and a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from the same institution in 1980. As a bachelors and masters student he received numerous community research awards in the early 1980’s to fund his laboratory work, which he used to developed a safe, oral vaccine to combat fowl cholera in turkeys and chickens. This vaccine remains in use today and is marketed as M-NINEVAX-C.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Marshall has been deeply involved in civic activities. He has served as a scout leader for the Boy Scouts of America from 1995 to 2011 and volunteers at his church as well as at a local children’s museum. His avocations include underwater photography, astrophotography, building audio equipment and woodworking, hobbies that allow him to express his creativity outside of the laboratory. Looking ahead, Dr. Marshall plans to focus on his well-being and spending quality time with his family. He aims to prioritize his health and cherish experiences with loved ones while consulting in precision medicine to ensure a balanced future.
