She has made history as the first African American to hold the position of chairman of Georgia’s Douglas County Board of Commissioners since 1870 and as the first African American female to win a county-wide election for commission chairman in Georgia’s history since 1788. In this role since 2017, she functions as the chief executive officer of Douglas County government, overseeing the administration of all departments and managing a workforce of 1,200 employees. Her responsibilities include presiding over board meetings, enacting legislation through ordinances and resolutions, and establishing strategic plans that guide the county’s mission and values.
Before her tenure in Douglas County, Dr. Jones had an extensive career in healthcare management. She served as manager of operations for the surgical services division at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where she was instrumental in managing operations and collaborating with various hospital associations. Her healthcare career also included roles at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Moreno Valley Medical Center in California, and Corona Regional Medical Center. Dr. Jones’s professional journey began with service in the United States Army as a medical specialist and operating room specialist, experience that laid the foundation for her subsequent roles in healthcare and public service. She has also contributed to academia as an adjunct professor at Brown Mackie College of Atlanta, where she taught surgical technology and medical assistant programs from 2008 to 2014. Additionally, she served as advisory board chair for the surgical technology program at Atlanta Metropolitan College.
Her commitment to public service extends beyond her professional roles. Dr. Jones is actively involved with several industry-related organizations, including the National Association of County Officials, the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia, the Atlanta Regional Commission Board of Directors, and others. Her civic engagement is further demonstrated through memberships with the United Way, Douglas County Kiwanis Club, the Rotary Club, American Veterans Post 118, and American Legion Post 145.
Dr. Jones’s academic credentials include a doctorate in educational leadership from Argosy University, a master’s degree in health administration from Chapman University, and a bachelor’s degree in healthcare management from Southern Illinois University. She is a certified commissioner by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government and a certified surgical technologist. She also is a graduate of the U.S. Army Academy of Health Sciences, where she received diplomas as a medical specialist and operating room specialist.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions to public health and leadership, Dr. Jones has received numerous awards, including a Volunteer Service Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama, the 2022 Fred Agel Governance Award for Outstanding Commitment and Service Promoting Public Health, a 2022 Woman of the Year Award, a 2019 Georgia Outstanding Citizen Award, and a 2014 Legionnaire of the Year from American Legion Post 145. She was also named among the 100 Most Influential Women Leaders by Georgia Engineering in 2022. Upon retiring from her healthcare career in 2016, she received a resolution from the Georgia senate noting her 40 years of service.
Born in Memphis, Dr. Jones is deeply committed to family and community; she takes pride in her roles as a mother, a veteran, a God-fearing woman, and a compassionate leader who was born to serve on all levels. Her family background includes a father who served as a paratrooper during the Korean War and a mother who has been a small business owner for over five decades.
She is a former Marine retired spouse and has one child who is a high school educator. She is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others, without seeking accolades.
